What is Babylon 5 about?

Babylon 5 is the show that proved science fiction television could be written like a novel. J. The result is a space opera where decisions made in season one echo painfully in season four, where characters are not just developed but genuinely transformed, and where the alien ambassadors, particularly Andreas Katsulas as G'Kar and Peter Jurasik as Londo Mollari, carry dramatic weight that most human characters on prestige dramas never achieve.

The tone is darker and more politically serious than its contemporaries. The first season struggles to find its footing, the fifth season was written after Straczynski had already wrapped his story thinking cancellation was coming, and some of the CGI and production design have aged about as gracefully as you would expect from mid-1990s television. None of that fully undermines what the show accomplishes at its best.

Critics at the time were respectful but rarely ecstatic, often caught up in comparisons to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which launched around the same time and shared the "space station diplomacy" premise. The debate over which show influenced which became a minor fandom war. Looking back, the two shows made very different choices, and Babylon 5's serialized ambition was ahead of what most television, not just science fiction, was attempting in the mid-1990s. Audiences responded with fierce loyalty that has kept the show's reputation alive long past its original run.

What stays with you is not the space battles or the mythology, though both have their moments, but Londo Mollari slowly drinking himself into a tragedy he can see coming and cannot stop. Jurasik plays it as something close to classical drama, and on a show airing on TNT in 1996, that is not something you expect to find.

Babylon 5 is one of the stranger success stories in science fiction television, and its ending is almost as complicated as its five-year arc. Creator J. Michael Straczynski had designed the show from the start as a finite story, a novel for television with a clear beginning, middle, and end. That was unusual in the mid-1990s, when most genre shows were built to run indefinitely. The plan was always to wrap up in five seasons, so the ending was not a failure or a retreat. It was the goal.

The path to that ending was genuinely rocky, though. After four seasons on PTEN, the show was cancelled by that network and picked up by TNT for a fifth season. The problem was that Straczynski had already compressed much of what was planned for seasons four and five into season four, fearing cancellation. When TNT renewed it, the show had to essentially rebuild its final year from partial concepts and secondary storylines. The result was a fifth season that many fans considered uneven compared to the tightly constructed seasons before it, and ratings on TNT, while respectable initially, declined as the season wore on.

By the end of 1998, the story had simply been told. TNT did not pursue further seasons, the ratings did not make a compelling case for continuation, and Straczynski had reached the end of what he had set out to say. The show ended on its own terms, more or less, even if the road there was messier than intended.
