The tone sits somewhere between character comedy and serious crime drama, which is a tricky balance and The Closer mostly manages it. Brenda's candy-hoarding habit and her thick Georgia drawl playing against the cynical Los Angeles veterans around her could easily tip into quirky-for-quirky's-sake territory, but Sedgwick grounds it. G.W. Bailey as the perpetually grumbling Provenza and Tony Denison as Flynn give the ensemble real texture. J.K. Simmons is reliably good in a role that asks him to be both antagonist and ally depending on the season's needs.

The show was genuinely popular in a way that cable dramas rarely were in 2005, regularly drawing audiences that broadcast networks would have been happy to claim. Critics recognized Sedgwick's work with a Golden Globe, which was deserved. The reception was warmer from audiences than from critics, who tended to note that the show's plotting could be uneven and that some of its handling of race and gender politics within the precinct aged awkwardly.
