What is Cold Case about?

Cold Case ran for seven seasons on CBS, which tells you something about how reliably it worked as Sunday night television. Kathryn Morris plays Lilly Rush, a Philadelphia detective who specializes in unsolved murders, and the show's basic engine is simple: a cold case gets reopened, we cycle between the present investigation and flashbacks to when the crime occurred, and by the end someone usually gets justice, however late it arrives.

The flashbacks are what give the show its particular texture. Among procedurals from that era, Cold Case was always slightly underrated in critical conversations, overshadowed by CBS stablemates like CSI that were flashier and more formally inventive. The show has real weaknesses: Morris's Lilly Rush is a somewhat undernourished character outside the interrogation room, and the supporting cast rarely got storylines proportionate to their screen time.

Cold Case aired alongside other CBS procedurals in a crowded Sunday night lineup, and by its later seasons the ratings, while still respectable for the era, had softened enough that the network chose to make room for other programming. CBS at the time was rotating in new procedural entries, and Cold Case, approaching the end of its second half-decade, was the one that gave way. There were also reported complications with music licensing. The show's format relied heavily on period-specific songs woven into its flashback structure, which made it expensive to produce and difficult to rerun or sell into syndication at a profit.

Those two factors together, declining ratings leverage and a cost structure that made the economics harder to justify, are typically what ends a long-running procedural that hasn't quite worn out its welcome with viewers but has worn out its usefulness to a network's schedule.
