What is Bosch about?

Bosch is a procedural that trusts its audience enough to slow down. Based on Michael Connelly's long-running novel series, the Amazon show follows LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch through seven seasons of cold cases, departmental politics, and the kind of moral grayness that comes from doing the right thing the wrong way for long enough that you stop being sure which is which.

Titus Welliver was never a conventional leading-man choice, and that turns out to be exactly right. He plays Bosch as weathered and interior, a man who communicates more through what he doesn't say than what he does. The show around him earns his performance by committing to Los Angeles as a real place, not a backdrop. The city, its class divisions, its police bureaucracy, its neighborhoods, gets as much attention as any single case. Lance Reddick as the calculating Deputy Chief Irving is a particular pleasure, a character who keeps you revising your opinion of him over the full run.

Critics were warm to it from early on, and it built a loyal audience that appreciated how seriously it took the craft of police procedural storytelling, even if it never quite became the cultural conversation piece that prestige cable dramas of the same era managed. The show's biggest weakness is probably that it can feel formulaic in its construction, each season mixing a procedural case with a longer arc in ways that become predictable by season four or five. The pacing is patient to the point of occasionally feeling inert.

Where Bosch distinguishes itself is in cumulative weight. Individual episodes can feel slight, but the relationships between Bosch, his daughter Maddie, and his partner Jerry Edgar deepen over time in ways that reward the viewer who stays with it. By the final season, you have spent enough time with these people that their choices carry real stakes, which is something most crime shows never manage to build.

Bosch ended because it was always going to end. The show was based on a finite series of novels by Michael Connelly, and Amazon gave it a long run by streaming standards, seven seasons across six years. By the time the final season aired in 2021, the writers had worked through most of the major Bosch novels and had reached a natural stopping point with the character. This wasn't a show that got the plug pulled on it.

The more interesting wrinkle is that ending Bosch didn't mean losing Titus Welliver in the role. Amazon greenlit a spinoff, Bosch: Legacy, which moved to their Freevee platform and continued the story with Welliver and much of the supporting cast. That decision tells you something about how the original series concluded: it wasn't cancelled because the character had worn out his welcome or because ratings were collapsing. It ended because the flagship version of the show had run its course, and the network found a way to keep the franchise going in a lower-cost environment.

For a streaming crime drama, 68 episodes is a genuinely substantial run, and an 8.5 on IMDb reflects an audience that stayed loyal throughout. Bosch was one of Prime Video's earliest prestige bets, back when Amazon was still figuring out what kind of television it wanted to make. Finishing on its own terms, with a spinoff waiting in the wings, is about as clean an exit as a show like this gets.
