Amazon's adaptation of Philip K. Dick's alternate history novel imagines an America in 1962 where the Axis won World War II, the country split between a Nazi-controlled East Coast and a Japanese-occupied Pacific States, with a lawless neutral zone in the middle. It is a genuinely unsettling premise, and the show earns its place on a streaming service willing to spend money on period detail. The production design is meticulous: Nazi flags on Manhattan skyscrapers, Japanese bureaucracy layered over San Francisco streets, the whole thing rendered with a specificity that makes the wrongness feel real rather than cartoonish.

The tone is slow and deliberate, occasionally to a fault. This is prestige television that takes its time, and in the early seasons that patience pays off. Rufus Sewell is the show's best asset, playing John Smith, a high-ranking SS officer in New York who is also an American, a family man, a true believer who keeps finding reasons to stay one. He's more interesting than the nominal protagonist, and the show seems to know it. The Nazi domestic scenes, full of suburban normalcy rotting from the inside, are where the series does its most uncomfortable and original work.

Critics responded well to the first two seasons, praising the atmosphere and the performances, though the consensus was that the show struggled to maintain momentum as it expanded its mythology around parallel universes and the mysterious films that give the series its name. Audience ratings on IMDb settle around a solid 7.9, which feels right: people who stuck with it valued it, but the back half of the run tested their patience. The later seasons lean harder into science fiction mechanics that Philip K. Dick would have recognized, but which don't always cohere on screen.

The show never had the kind of explosive mainstream numbers that would have pushed Amazon to demand more seasons regardless of creative logic. It performed respectably, with a dedicated audience that appreciated the world-building and the moral complexity, but it wasn't a runaway cultural phenomenon. Four seasons and 40 episodes gave the creative team enough room to develop the alternate Reich and Japanese Pacific States in serious depth, and continuing past that point would have risked diminishing what the show had built.

Ultimately this looks like a case where a streaming drama ran its planned course. Amazon let it finish on its own terms, which is more than a lot of shows get. The source material was exhausted long before the series ended, so the writers had been expanding Dick's world from their own imagination for most of the run.
