Critics from outside religious circles have noted this with some surprise. The IMDb rating sits at 9.1, which reflects a deeply committed fan base rather than critical consensus, but the passion of that audience is real and has driven the show's expansion in ways that few niche productions ever achieve.

What lingers is how small the show keeps its ambitions moment to moment, even when the story is cosmically large. A scene of Jesus laughing at dinner, or Matthew struggling to understand a social interaction he cannot read, does more work than any miraculous setpiece.
