Mary Magdalene, Matthew the tax collector, and Simon Peter all get genuine character arcs, not just background roles. Audience reception has been striking. A 9.1 on IMDb from tens of thousands of voters is not easy to fake, and the fanbase is genuinely devoted. Critical response has been more measured, with some reviewers noting that the show's earnestness can tip into sentimentality, and that pacing across six seasons is uneven. Both things are true. The show occasionally leans too hard on swelling music to signal emotional significance, trusting the score where the scene could do more work on its own.
What's harder to dismiss is that The Chosen does something most faith-based productions don't: it assumes the audience can handle complexity and still believe. The disciples are petty, territorial, and frightened. Simon Peter in particular is written with real specificity, a man whose loyalty and impulsiveness are the same quality, not opposites.
