What is MacGyver about?

CBS's 2016 revival of MacGyver takes the original's central conceit, a resourceful secret agent who improvises his way through crises using whatever happens to be nearby, and rebuilds it around a younger cast and a brighter, more kinetic aesthetic. Lucas Till plays a twentysomething Mac who works within a Phoenix Foundation-style black-ops team, and the show leans hard into the DIY problem-solving formula. Each episode typically pauses the action for Mac to explain, in cheerful voiceover, exactly what household item he is combining with what chemical compound to produce which result. It's the closest network television comes to a STEM tutorial wrapped in an action sequence.

The tone is relentlessly upbeat, sometimes to a fault. The humor is broad, the villains are disposable, and the emotional stakes rarely rise above the level of light concern. That isn't necessarily a disqualification for a Friday night procedural, but it does mean the show coasts on charm more than tension. Justin Hires provides most of the comic relief as Bozer, and the ensemble gets shuffled around across the five seasons with varying success. Henry Ian Cusick joined later seasons and brought some welcome edge to a show that occasionally needed it.

Critics were not particularly impressed. The IMDB score of 5.5 reflects a general sense that this is watchable but undemanding television, a show critics described as slick and hollow in roughly equal measure. Audiences who grew up with the original Richard Dean Anderson series had mixed feelings, though younger viewers with no attachment to the source material seemed more willing to go along with it on its own terms.

What the show did consistently well was make MacGyver's improvised solutions feel like the actual point, not just a gimmick. Other procedurals use a protagonist's special skill as set dressing. Here, the jerry-rigged fix is the scene, the payoff, the whole reason you are watching, and the show understood that enough to keep it front and center for 94 episodes.
