The show follows the Impossible Missions Force, a group of government agents who dismantle criminal organizations and hostile regimes through elaborately choreographed cons rather than shoot-outs. Peter Graves took over as team leader Jim Phelps in season two and stayed for the run, projecting a calm authority that the show relied on heavily. The self-destructing tape briefing and Lalo Schifrin's instantly recognizable theme became signatures so durable they survived into the film franchise decades later.

The tone is cool and procedural, almost clinical. There is very little sentimentality, and the show does not spend much time on the inner lives of its characters. Creator Bruce Geller kept the focus on mechanics: the disguise, the forged document, the carefully placed bug. Greg Morris as tech specialist Barney Collier was notably ahead of his time, a Black actor in a leading role with genuine competence at the center of nearly every operation, at a moment when television rarely managed either.

Critics respected the show's craftsmanship and it performed well enough to run seven seasons, which is a straightforward measure of audience loyalty. It won the Emmy for Outstanding Dramatic Series in its first two seasons, which reflects how seriously the industry took it at the time. The 1988 ABC revival suggested the format still had life, and the Cruise films are direct evidence that the core concept, the team, the tape, the theme, proved more resilient than almost any other sixties television property.

Where the show holds up best is in those middle seasons, when the formula was locked in and the production had the confidence to lean into increasingly baroque scenarios. It is not a show that rewards deep character investment, but for viewers who find pleasure in a well-sprung trap closing shut exactly on schedule, it remains oddly satisfying.

The ratings had softened considerably in the later seasons. The show had been a genuine hit in the late 1960s, but network television was changing around it. CBS was in the middle of a broader programming overhaul in the early 1970s, clearing out shows associated with an older or rural audience, and while Mission: Impossible skewed differently from something like Green Acres, it too was seen as part of an aging schedule. The network was actively reshaping its identity, and long-running action dramas were not the priority they had once been.

There was also the matter of Peter Graves and the ensemble around him. The cast had already gone through significant changes over the years, most notably the departure of Peter Graves's predecessor Martin Landau and Barbara Bain after the third season. By 1973, the show had lost some of the chemistry and novelty that made it exciting in the first place. Seven seasons was a reasonable point to stop, and CBS and the producers appear to have agreed that the run had reached its end.
