What is MacGyver about?

That is a rare thing for a television character to achieve.

The tone is unusually earnest for an action show. MacGyver has a moral code, cares about the environment, and genuinely dislikes violence. This could have made him insufferable, but Anderson plays him with enough low-key charm that it mostly works. The plots are often thin and the science is frequently nonsense, but the show has a kind of optimism that feels specific to its era, a belief that a calm head and some practical knowledge can get you out of almost anything. Dana Elcar as Pete Thornton, MacGyver's boss and friend, gives the show more warmth than the premise strictly required.

Audiences responded well enough to keep it on the air for 139 episodes, and it holds a solid 7.6 on IMDb, which reflects genuine affection rather than critical re-evaluation. It was never prestige television. Critics at the time treated it as reliable entertainment rather than anything to examine closely, and that assessment is still basically fair.

What keeps people coming back to it now is probably Anderson himself. He underplays everything just enough that the absurdity lands as fun rather than stupid, and watching him stare at a pile of junk and figure out an escape remains oddly satisfying even when you know exactly what is coming.

MacGyver ran for seven seasons on ABC, which is a genuinely long run for any primetime drama, and by the early 1990s the show had simply reached a natural endpoint. The premise, however clever, had inherent limitations. There are only so many times an audience will watch a man defuse a situation with household chemicals and a Swiss Army knife before the formula starts to feel exhausted, and by seasons six and seven the ratings had declined considerably from the show's mid-1980s peak.

Richard Dean Anderson was also the engine that made the whole thing work, and there were well-documented indications that he was ready to move on. When the lead actor loses enthusiasm for a long-running show, it tends to show, and continuing without his genuine investment would have hurt the character more than ending it cleanly. ABC and the producers appear to have reached a mutual understanding that seven seasons was a reasonable place to stop.

The show also belonged very specifically to its era. MacGyver's particular brand of Cold War-adjacent adventure and its almost optimistic faith in ingenuity and non-violence felt slightly out of step with where action television was heading in the early 1990s. The genre was getting darker and more cynical, and MacGyver's essentially wholesome sensibility had less of a home in that environment. Ending in 1992 was, in retrospect, the right call, and the show left with its reputation intact rather than limping to a conclusion nobody wanted.
