What is Columbo about?

Peter Falk spent roughly three decades playing the same rumpled Los Angeles homicide detective, and the character never got old. That is the first remarkable thing about Columbo. The second is that the show structured itself as the opposite of a whodunit: you watch the murder happen in the opening minutes, you know exactly who did it, and then you watch Columbo figure it out. The tension is entirely inverted. You are waiting for the detective to catch up to what you already know, which sounds like it should be less interesting and is somehow more.

The tone is unusually pleasant for a murder show. Columbo is genuinely funny, unhurried, and comfortable with its own eccentricities. The killers are almost always wealthy, educated, and condescending, which gives the show a mild class-war satisfaction every time Falk shuffles in wearing that battered raincoat and starts asking seemingly stupid questions. He is never stupid. The formula is rigid and the show knows it and leans into it completely, which is either a feature or a limitation depending on your patience for repetition.

Critics and audiences embraced Falk's performance consistently across its long run, and the show picked up multiple Emmy wins over the years. The revival movies that ran through the late 1980s and 1990s on ABC maintained a loyal following even as the cultural moment had moved on, largely because Falk himself remained so watchable and clearly enjoyed the character.

Compared to the procedurals that came after it, Columbo is slow in a way that rewards attention rather than demanding it. Modern crime television tends toward serial arcs and mounting darkness. This show is episodic, essentially consequence-free between installments, and ends the same way every time. What keeps it from feeling mechanical is Falk's habit of finding something slightly different in Columbo each episode, a small moment of genuine curiosity or weariness that makes the character feel inhabited rather than performed.

Columbo never really followed conventional television logic, so it makes sense that its ending was equally unconventional. The show ran in fits and starts across four decades, beginning on NBC in the early 1970s as part of the Mystery Movie wheel, going dormant for years, then reviving on ABC in 1989 as a series of TV movies. That revival format, with Peter Falk returning to the raincoat for occasional specials rather than a full weekly schedule, worked well through the 1990s. By the early 2000s, though, the pace had slowed considerably, and the 2003 film "Columbo Likes the Nightlife" turned out to be the last one made.

The show essentially wound down rather than being cut off. Falk was in his mid-70s by the final entry, and the TV movie format that had sustained the revival was itself falling out of fashion with networks that were increasingly focused on serialized drama and reality programming. There was no dramatic cancellation moment, no public announcement that the franchise was finished. The movies simply stopped being commissioned, and Falk's own declining health in subsequent years made a return increasingly unlikely. He died in 2011.

What Columbo ultimately ran out of was momentum and a natural home. The weekly mystery anthology format it thrived in had largely disappeared from American television. The show had outlasted its era by sheer force of Falk's personality and the character's genuine appeal, but even that could only carry it so far.
