What is The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power about?

Amazon spent more money on The Rings of Power than some countries spend on public broadcasting, and the result looks exactly like that. The show is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before the events of Tolkien's novels, which means it has the freedom to invent while carrying the obligation to feel right. It follows Galadriel hunting the last traces of Morgoth's evil, Elrond navigating a complicated friendship with the dwarf prince Durin IV, a mysterious wanderer who may or may not be a wizard, and the island civilization of Númenor sliding toward catastrophe. There is a lot of show here. Perhaps too much.

What distinguishes the series, for better and worse, is its deliberate pacing. The first season in particular moves like a long establishing shot. Some viewers find this meditative, even faithful to Tolkien's unhurried prose. Others find it numbing. The visual design is extraordinary throughout, and the performances are mostly strong, with Morfydd Clark bringing a real brittleness to Galadriel that complicates the character's legendary status. Charlie Vickers as Sauron carries most of the dramatic weight in season two, and lands it. The show is at its best when it trusts its quieter material, at its worst when it reaches for spectacle to fill the space that character development hasn't quite earned yet.

Reception has been sharply divided. Critics tended to praise the craft and ambition while noting the writing's unevenness. Audience scores lagged behind critical ones, partly due to organized review-bombing in the early weeks, but the 6.9 on IMDb after hundreds of thousands of votes suggests the skepticism runs deeper than bad actors. The show struggles with its enormous ensemble, and several storylines in the first season feel like they exist to justify screen time not tell a story worth following.

Peter Jackson's film trilogy still casts a long shadow, and Rings of Power has never fully escaped the comparison. It is a different kind of adaptation, drawing on Tolkien's appendices and not his narrative prose, which gives it more architectural freedom but less of the intimate, grounded feeling the films managed even at their most epic. Season two tightened the focus considerably and earned back some of the goodwill the first season spent. The show is still finding out what it is, which, after twenty-four episodes and the most expensive television production in history, is a stranger situation than it sounds.
