What is Merlin about?

BBC's Merlin takes the Arthurian legend and runs it backwards, giving us a young, awkward Merlin long before he becomes the great sorcerer of myth, serving as a manservant to a prince who doesn't yet know his destiny. Colin Morgan plays Merlin with a goofy, wide-eyed sincerity that carries the show through its wobblier moments, and Bradley James matches him well as an Arthur who is arrogant enough to be interesting but not so unlikeable that you stop rooting for him. The central friendship is the real engine here, and when it works, it genuinely works.

The tone sits somewhere between family adventure and light drama. It is not trying to be Game of Thrones. The early seasons lean heavily into monster-of-the-week plotting, which can feel repetitive, and the show's decision to keep Merlin's magic a secret from Arthur for five full seasons tests patience considerably. But the production commits to its world with real affection, and there is a warmth running through it that darker fantasy shows rarely bother with. John Hurt voicing the dragon Kilgharrah adds unexpected gravitas to what is otherwise a fairly breezy affair.

Critics were largely kind, praising the chemistry of the leads while noting the formulaic structure. Audiences, particularly younger ones, took to it with genuine enthusiasm, and it built a devoted following across its run. The ratings in the UK were strong enough to sustain five seasons, though fan frustration with slow-burning storylines, particularly around Morgana's arc becoming increasingly one-note, was a recurring complaint.

The final season tightens things up and takes real risks, and the series finale is genuinely moving in ways the show only intermittently earns before that point. It is a show that coasts a fair amount on charm, but the charm is real enough that coasting still gets it somewhere worth arriving.

Merlin was always designed with a built-in expiration date. The entire premise rested on a dramatic irony, Merlin secretly protecting a young Arthur while hiding his magic, and that tension could only be sustained for so long before it became exhausting rather than exciting. By season five, the writers were clearly working toward resolving the central mythology, moving Arthur toward Camelot's golden age and inevitably toward its fall. The show ended because the creators chose to end it, landing on the Arthurian legend's tragic conclusion rather than stretching the premise past its natural limits.

That said, ratings had softened over the later seasons. The show peaked in its early run as a family fantasy adventure on BBC One, but by 2012 it was no longer the event viewing it once was. Fantasy audiences had more options, and Merlin's relatively lighthearted tone in the earlier seasons had shifted into darker territory that didn't always hold the same broad appeal. The BBC and the production team, by most accounts, reached a mutual agreement that five seasons was the right place to stop.

The finale itself, broadcast on Christmas Eve 2012, was genuinely ambitious in how it committed to the legend's sorrowful ending. Whatever its flaws, it wasn't a cancellation dressed up as closure. The show ran its course, told the story it set out to tell, and stopped. For a fantasy series on British television, that's actually a reasonably dignified exit.
