What is Line of Duty about?

Line of Duty is a procedural about internal affairs at its most paranoid. AC-12, a secretive anticorruption unit within a British police force, hunts officers suspected of serious wrongdoing, and the show orbits the question of whether the hunters have become as bent as the hunted. It appeals to viewers who want their crime drama laced with procedural detail and moral ambiguity, where a suspect's guilt remains genuinely uncertain until the interrogation room confession (or doesn't come). The appeal is partly architectural: watching the unit's three leads methodically unpick a case, rewinding video, tracing phone records, building a case that might fall apart in hours.

What makes the show distinctive is its refusal to offer easy answers. Jed Mercurio designs cases that could plausibly resolve multiple ways, and the writing holds that ambiguity close. Suspects lie, witnesses contradict themselves, and the rules themselves are sometimes bent to catch someone. Hastings, the granite-faced superintendent played by Adrian Dunbar, quotes Greek verse and delivers monologues about institutional corruption with the weight of a man who has seen too much. The tone is cold and procedurally meticulous, with moments of dark humor landing quietly between scenes of real tension. It never becomes flashy or loses interest in the granular work of building a case.

The show developed a devoted audience across its seven seasons, with critics praising its structure and restraint, though the later seasons drew complaints that it was becoming overly convoluted and that its final answers disappointed after such elaborate setup. The 2021 finale proved divisive, with some viewers feeling cheated by revelations that felt too straightforward after years of mystery. Still, the earlier seasons remain widely respected for showing how institutional rot works and how easily good cops can be turned or compromised by the weight of the job.

Line of Duty sits apart from most crime procedurals because it treats the police as the subject of investigation, not the heroes. It shares DNA with shows about institutions under pressure, but it's tighter and more skeptical about whether institutions can really police themselves.
