Doctor Who ran on BBC One for twenty-six years, and across that stretch it became something genuinely strange in television history: a children's adventure show that kept reinventing itself by killing off its main character and replacing him with someone else entirely. The premise, a time-traveling alien in a blue police box, sounds like a one-season curiosity. Instead it became a permanent piece of British culture, with six actors playing the Doctor across the original run.

The show's tone shifts enormously depending on which era you're watching. The 1960s episodes have a scrappy, educational quality, with genuine attempts to teach history alongside the monsters. By the Tom Baker years in the 1970s, the series had found its stride: gothic, witty, occasionally terrifying in that particular way that hides behind cheap production values. The later years turned darker and more self-aware, and the final McCoy season in particular has a cult following for treating the Doctor as a genuinely alien and manipulative figure rather than a reassuring grandfather type. Sophie Aldred's Ace remains one of the better companions the show produced, a teenager with a baseball bat and real emotional damage.

Reception was complicated even during the original run. The BBC quietly cancelled it in 1985 before public outcry forced a reversal, and the show limped along for four more years before ending without ceremony in 1989. Critics and fans have spent decades arguing about which eras work and which do not, and the truth is that 694 episodes contains multitudes: some of the best science fiction television made anywhere, and also some of the most unwatchable.

What's easy to forget, watching it now, is how much the show's limitations became part of its identity. The wobbly sets and recycled quarries somehow made the universe feel more precarious, more handmade, more dependent on your willingness to go along with it. Doctor Who ran for twenty-six years, which is itself an extraordinary feat, and by the late 1980s the show was simply exhausted. Ratings had been declining steadily through the decade, and the BBC's relationship with the series had grown increasingly hostile under controller Michael Grade, who openly disliked the programme and put it on an eighteen-month hiatus in 1985. That move damaged the show's momentum and its reputation, signalling to audiences that the corporation no longer stood behind it. Viewership never fully recovered.

The show that returned in 1986 was competing in a landscape where BBC One schedulers seemed actively indifferent to its success, frequently placing it opposite Coronation Street on ITV, which was ratings suicide. The production values, always modest, looked more threadbare by comparison with American science fiction films of the era, and the scripts had become increasingly difficult to follow for casual viewers. The core audience shrank, and younger viewers never replaced those who had drifted away.

By 1989, when Sylvester McCoy's final season aired, the BBC simply did not renew it. There was no formal cancellation announcement at the time, just a quiet withdrawal of support, which left the show in a strange limbo for years. It was not given a proper finale or a send-off of any kind. The corporation eventually confirmed in 1990 that no new series was planned. It was less a decision than a slow abandonment, which in some ways was worse.
