At its best, something like "It's a Good Life" or "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street," the series used science fiction as a scalpel to cut into Cold War paranoia, conformity, and the ordinary cruelty people are capable of. Serling himself was worn thin. Writing or co-writing the majority of episodes across five seasons at that pace is a grueling creative commitment, and by 1964 the well was running low. The anthology format, which required fresh ideas and fresh casts every single week, placed enormous pressure on the writing staff. When the hour-long gamble failed to pay off, CBS and Serling mutually moved on. The network cancelled it rather than renew, but it would be a stretch to call the ending a surprise or a tragedy. The show had already delivered an extraordinary body of work.
