What is Elementary about?

CBS had no shortage of procedural crime dramas in 2012, so Elementary had to justify its existence against both the crowded network landscape and the BBC's Sherlock, which had arrived two years earlier and was busy being celebrated as essential television. The answer Robert Doherty came up with was to cast Lucy Liu as Joan Watson, and to let that relationship, not the casework, carry the show's emotional weight. Jonny Lee Miller plays Holmes as a recovering addict rather than a mere eccentric, and the series spends real time on that recovery, on sponsorship, on meetings, on the specific texture of staying sober in a city that never makes it easy.

The tone is warmer than you might expect from a Holmes adaptation. Miller's Sherlock is still abrasive and often insufferable, but the show is unusually interested in whether he can become a better person, and Liu's Watson is not a sidekick. She starts as his sober companion, earns her own skills as an investigator over the course of the series, and by later seasons is a full partner. That dynamic, two adults actually changing because of each other, gives Elementary a long-haul watchability that more stylistically flashy procedurals struggle to maintain across seven seasons.

Critical reception was respectful without being effusive. Reviewers noted that it was smarter than CBS's usual procedural fare, praised the central chemistry, and occasionally worried that the case-of-the-week structure kept it from fully realizing its ambitions. Audiences were more straightforwardly enthusiastic, keeping it on the air for 154 episodes, which says something about how well the show understood what its viewers actually wanted from a weekly hour of television.

What distinguishes Elementary from its BBC counterpart, ultimately, is that it chose consistency over brilliance. Sherlock swings for transcendence and sometimes misses badly. Elementary rarely swings that hard, but it also never collapses under the weight of its own mythology. By the final season, the show had become something genuinely modest by Holmes standards: a character study about two people who made each other functional, dressed up as a detective show.

By its later seasons, the ratings had softened considerably from the strong numbers the show pulled in its early run. CBS procedurals tend to age this way, drawing loyal but gradually shrinking audiences as a series moves deeper into its run. Elementary also faced the particular challenge of existing alongside BBC's Sherlock, which occupied a different but overlapping cultural space, and the show had to continually justify its own version of Holmes and Watson. It did that reasonably well for years, largely on the strength of Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu's chemistry, but there is a ceiling on how long any procedural can sustain that kind of creative energy.

Season seven was a short final run of thirteen episodes, and it had the shape of a deliberate conclusion rather than a sudden ending. CBS and the producers knew they were wrapping things up. The show got to close on its own terms, which is genuinely unusual in network television and says something about the goodwill Elementary had built over the years. It ended because it had run its course, not because anyone pulled the plug.
