What is Elementary about?

Elementary ran for seven seasons on CBS, which is itself a kind of argument. What those critics underestimated was how much the casting of Lucy Liu as Joan Watson would reframe the entire premise. Watson here is not a sidekick or a foil. She starts as Sherlock's sober companion, transitions into a detective in her own right, and the show keeps its word on that development over the long haul in a way network television rarely does.

Jonny Lee Miller plays Holmes as genuinely difficult rather than performatively quirky. The addiction backstory is not just flavor. The show takes recovery seriously enough to make it structural, and Miller finds real texture in a character who is often wrong about himself even when he is right about everything else. The tone is warmer than you might expect, not cozy exactly, but invested in its characters in a way that the procedural format sometimes fights against. The weekly mysteries are variable, some are inventive and some are purely functional, and by the later seasons the show was clearly running on loyalty rather than inspiration. But the central relationship earned that loyalty.

Audiences responded well enough to keep it on air for 154 episodes, and the IMDb rating of 7.9 reflects a show that people genuinely liked rather than one they felt obligated to defend. Critical reception was mixed in the early going, warmer over time as the Liu and Miller dynamic proved itself. It never generated the cultural noise of prestige cable drama, but it was doing something CBS procedurals rarely attempt, which is genuine character change sustained across years.

The final season was truncated and the ending rushed, which is an honest disappointment given how carefully the show had built to that point. It is one of those cases where the journey was the point, and the destination felt like a formality.
