Kathryn Erbe as his partner Eames provides the grounding that keeps Goren from becoming pure affectation. Critics generally appreciated the show for its psychological ambitions, and audiences responded warmly enough that it ran for ten seasons across NBC and USA Network. The 7.5 on IMDb reflects a fanbase that remains genuinely fond of it rather than one defending a masterpiece. The show could be uneven, and Goren's genius occasionally tips into self-parody, but when the writing matched D'Onofrio's commitment, it produced some legitimately unsettling television.

The show shares DNA with Columbo more than with its own parent franchise. Like that series, the suspense comes not from whodunit but from watching the detective circle closer. The network situation also shaped the ending significantly. NBC moved Criminal Intent to USA Network in 2007, which kept it alive but also signaled that it was no longer a priority for the mothership.
