What is Unforgettable about?

Carrie Wells, the detective at the center of Unforgettable, can remember every moment of her life except the one that matters most: the day her sister was killed. That central irony is the most interesting thing about the show, and CBS being CBS, it mostly stays in the background while Carrie and her ex-boyfriend Al work through a standard procedural case each week. Poppy Montgomery is likable enough in the role, giving Carrie a dry wit that keeps the character from becoming a novelty act built around her photographic memory gimmick.

The tone is familiar network crime drama, competent and undemanding. The hyperthymesia angle mostly functions as a plot convenience, letting Carrie replay crime scenes in vivid detail and catch details other detectives miss. It rarely feels like a genuine exploration of what it would actually mean to forget nothing. The show is at its best in the quieter moments when Carrie sits with the weight of perfect recall rather than just using it to solve a murder.

Critics were mostly indifferent, and audiences were split in a curious way. The show was cancelled by CBS after its second season in 2012, then revived on A&E for two more seasons before ending for good in 2016. That unusual trajectory says something real about its appeal: not enough people loved it to keep it on a major network, but enough liked it that someone thought it was worth another shot.

The revival seasons on A&E are noticeably cheaper-looking, and the supporting cast around Montgomery never quite gels into anything memorable. La La Anthony tries, but her character has almost nothing to do.
