What is Sherlock about?

Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes is not a reimagining so much as a hostile takeover. He sweeps through early 21st century London as a "high-functioning sociopath" (his words, delivered with obvious satisfaction), texting instead of telegraphing, consulting for Scotland Yard on crimes that unspool across feature-length episodes, not tidy Victorian cases. Martin Freeman's Watson is a war-returned GP who blogs about the cases, and the two of them share a Baker Street flat and a genuinely funny dynamic that drives the show more than any murder mystery does.

The tone is brisk, stylish, and a little pleased with itself, which suits the source material but occasionally curdles into smugness. Moffat and Gatiss layer in visual tricks, onscreen text overlays, and a score that became briefly inescapable, and the whole thing feels constructed by people who adored the original Conan Doyle stories and wanted everyone to know it. That is charming in the first two series and starts to feel like an affliction by the fourth. The later seasons chase increasingly baroque plot twists involving hidden siblings and trauma reveals, and the show loses the quality that made its early episodes so satisfying: actual detective work.

Critically and commercially, the show was a phenomenon. Its 9/10 IMDb rating from over a million voters reflects a devoted global audience that turned Cumberbatch into an overnight star and briefly made the long wait between series a cultural event. Critics adored the first series and grew more divided as the show's ambitions outpaced its coherence.

Other procedurals set Sherlock next to Elementary or the Robert Downey Jr. films, but neither comparison quite fits. Those productions are content to be entertainments. This one always wanted to be something more, which is exactly why it disappoints when it fails, and why the first series still holds up so well.

Sherlock was never really built to run forever. From the start, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were film and stage actors with busy careers, and the show's format, four 90-minute episodes per series released years apart, always made it feel like an event rather than a conventional ongoing series. That scheduling model worked brilliantly in the early years when anticipation was high, but it also meant the show had no real momentum to sustain itself between runs.

By the time Series 4 arrived in January 2017, the critical and audience enthusiasm that had made Sherlock a phenomenon had cooled considerably. The show had grown increasingly convoluted and self-referential, and the finale in particular divided viewers sharply. Cumberbatch and Freeman had both become major film stars in the intervening years, with the Marvel and Hobbit franchises pulling heavily on their schedules. Getting the core cast together for another series would have been a logistical puzzle even if creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss had wanted to solve it.

Moffat and Gatiss have been open about the difficulty of returning, and the show seems to have reached a natural stopping point rather than being cut short. Twelve episodes over seven years is a modest count by any measure, and the story they wanted to tell, the origin and forging of Holmes and Watson's partnership, had essentially been told. Whether a fifth series will ever materialise remains an occasional topic of speculation, but for now Sherlock ended less by decision than by circumstance, the window simply closing on its own.
