What is Sherlock about?

Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes is rude, restless, and genuinely strange, and for the first two seasons that strangeness is the whole point. The BBC's modern update transplants Conan Doyle's detective to present-day London, gives him a blog instead of a journal and a nicotine patch instead of a pipe, and largely gets away with the conceit because the writing is sharp enough to earn its cleverness. Martin Freeman's Watson is the real emotional anchor, a quietly good man trying to keep up with someone who barely registers that other people have feelings.

The tone is brisk and theatrical, with a visual style that turns deduction sequences into something closer to animation than naturalistic drama. Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss write dialogue that crackles in the early episodes, and the show at its best has real wit. The problem is that it starts to admire itself rather too much as it goes on. By series three and four the plotting gets baroque, the fan service becomes load-bearing, and the show that once felt like a tight puzzle box turns into something more like a magician who keeps announcing how difficult the trick is.

Critics adored it early on, and audiences followed in enormous numbers. That IMDb score of 9 out of 10 from over a million voters reflects the genuine devotion the show inspired, particularly after the second series finale. The later seasons generated more mixed reactions, with some viewers feeling the character work had been swamped by spectacle, and the fourth series in particular divided people sharply.

There have been plenty of Holmes adaptations, and there will be more, but this one made Cumberbatch a star and briefly made Sherlock Holmes feel like urgent television. The first two series are worth your time almost without reservation. After that, your mileage will depend on how much you enjoy watching a show compete with its own mythology.

Sherlock was never really built to run forever. From the start, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were film and stage actors with busy careers, and the show's format, four 90-minute episodes per series released years apart, always made it feel like an event rather than a conventional ongoing series. That scheduling model worked brilliantly in the early years when anticipation was high, but it also meant the show had no real momentum to sustain itself between runs.

By the time Series 4 arrived in January 2017, the critical and audience enthusiasm that had made Sherlock a phenomenon had cooled considerably. The show had grown increasingly convoluted and self-referential, and the finale in particular divided viewers sharply. Cumberbatch and Freeman had both become major film stars in the intervening years, with the Marvel and Hobbit franchises pulling heavily on their schedules. Getting the core cast together for another series would have been a logistical puzzle even if creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss had wanted to solve it.

Moffat and Gatiss have been open about the difficulty of returning, and the show seems to have reached a natural stopping point rather than being cut short. Twelve episodes over seven years is a modest count by any measure, and the story they wanted to tell, the origin and forging of Holmes and Watson's partnership, had essentially been told. Whether a fifth series will ever materialise remains an occasional topic of speculation, but for now Sherlock ended less by decision than by circumstance, the window simply closing on its own.
