What is Sons of Anarchy about?

Sons of Anarchy ran for seven seasons on FX and built one of the most devoted cable audiences of its era around a fairly simple premise: a young man who loves his family and his gang is slowly destroyed by both. Charlie Hunnam plays Jax Teller, the vice president of a motorcycle club in the fictional California town of Charming, and the show follows his increasingly futile attempts to steer the club away from violence while sinking deeper into it himself. It borrows its bones from Hamlet, which creator Kurt Sutter was not shy about acknowledging, and that literary scaffolding gives the early seasons a sense of tragic inevitability that the show earns.

The tone is operatic in the way that the best FX dramas of that period were, soaked in blood and loyalty and bad decisions made for understandable reasons. Katey Sagal is the secret engine of the whole thing as Gemma, Jax's mother, a woman whose protectiveness curdles so thoroughly into manipulation that she becomes one of the more frightening characters in prestige television. She won a Golden Globe for the role. The show has a real feeling for the culture it depicts, the rituals and hierarchies of club life, even if it amplifies everything for dramatic effect.

The first four seasons have a tightness and momentum that made the show appointment viewing. Critics responded warmly, particularly to Sagal and to the moral complexity the writing managed in its better moments. Audiences were more than warm; they were fervent. The back half of the run, however, is a different matter. Sutter's storytelling grew sprawling and punishing in ways that started to feel less like tragedy and more like endurance. The final season, in particular, stacks its body count so high that the emotional weight per death approaches zero.

Still, the show did something few crime dramas bother with: it kept the women's perspectives genuinely in frame. Gemma is not a peripheral figure enduring her husband's world. She drives the plot as often as Jax does, and her arc across all seven seasons is the one that lingers longest after the finale ends.

Sons of Anarchy ended because creator Kurt Sutter always intended it to run seven seasons. The show was consciously modeled on Hamlet, with Jax Teller's arc designed to move from inheritance and idealism through corruption and toward a tragic conclusion. Sutter was telling a finite story, and the seventh season was its intended endpoint. The finale, which aired in December 2014, brought that arc to its logical and brutal close.

The show's numbers actually supported continuing. Sons of Anarchy was FX's highest-rated drama for much of its run, and the final season drew millions of viewers per episode. FX would almost certainly have commissioned more had Sutter wanted to keep going. But stretching the story beyond its natural ending would have undermined everything the show was built on. The Hamlet parallel only works if the protagonist dies, and there was nowhere meaningful to go after that.

There is also something worth noting about the timing. By season seven, the show had pushed its central character into genuinely dark territory, and some critics felt the series had already tested audience patience with escalating violence and increasingly tangled plotting. Whether Sutter sensed that the well was running dry, or whether he simply stuck to the plan he had from the beginning, the result was the same. Sons of Anarchy finished on its own terms, which is rarer than it should be for a show that successful.
