What is Sons of Anarchy about?

Sons of Anarchy ran for seven seasons on FX and remains one of cable television's more interesting examples of a show that started brilliantly and then had to be dragged, limping, to a finish line it took far too long to reach. The premise is essentially Hamlet on motorcycles, which sounds ridiculous until you watch it, and for the first three or four seasons it genuinely works. Charming, California is a believable company town where a motorcycle club runs everything, and the tension between Jax Teller's half-formed idealism and the brutal machinery of the club he inherited gives the early episodes a real moral weight.

Charlie Hunnam holds the center well enough, though Katey Sagal as Gemma is the show's actual engine. She plays the club matriarch as someone who genuinely loves her family and is also capable of monstrous things, often in the same scene. The show at its best is about how institutions corrupt people who think they can reform them from the inside, and Gemma is proof that it understood that idea better than Jax ever did.

Critics largely praised the early seasons for doing serious dramatic work inside what could have been a pulpy action vehicle. Audiences followed in large numbers, and the show built a devoted fan base that sustained it through some genuinely rough patches. Those patches are real. The middle seasons bloat badly, adding cartel storylines and body counts that feel more like obligation than drama, and by season six the show is running on inertia and familiar tragedy.

What saves the ending, despite its length, is that Sutter commits to it completely. The final season goes to dark places with consequences that feel earned, and the last episode has the courage to be bleak rather than redemptive. Whatever its excesses, Sons of Anarchy never flinched when it finally got around to paying its debts.

Sons of Anarchy ended because creator Kurt Sutter always intended it to run seven seasons. The show was consciously modeled on Hamlet, with Jax Teller's arc designed to move from inheritance and idealism through corruption and toward a tragic conclusion. Sutter was telling a finite story, and the seventh season was its intended endpoint. The finale, which aired in December 2014, brought that arc to its logical and brutal close.

The show's numbers actually supported continuing. Sons of Anarchy was FX's highest-rated drama for much of its run, and the final season drew millions of viewers per episode. FX would almost certainly have commissioned more had Sutter wanted to keep going. But stretching the story beyond its natural ending would have undermined everything the show was built on. The Hamlet parallel only works if the protagonist dies, and there was nowhere meaningful to go after that.

There is also something worth noting about the timing. By season seven, the show had pushed its central character into genuinely dark territory, and some critics felt the series had already tested audience patience with escalating violence and increasingly tangled plotting. Whether Sutter sensed that the well was running dry, or whether he simply stuck to the plan he had from the beginning, the result was the same. Sons of Anarchy finished on its own terms, which is rarer than it should be for a show that successful.
