What is Justified about?

Timothy Olyphant plays Raylan Givens as a man who has decided that being right and being quick on the draw are essentially the same thing, and for six seasons that assumption gets tested from every direction. Raylan is a U.S. Marshal from Harlan County, Kentucky, reassigned back to his home state after shooting a man in Miami, and the show is fundamentally about what happens when you think you've escaped a place and it turns out the place never let you go.

The tone is where Justified earns its reputation. It comes from Elmore Leonard's fiction, and it keeps faith with Leonard's particular rhythm: people who are funny, dangerous, and not quite as smart as they believe, talking their way into corners they have to shoot their way out of. The dialogue crackles without ever feeling written. There's real wit here, not the procedural kind where a quip follows a corpse, but the kind where the humor and the menace are genuinely the same thing.

The finale gave Raylan and Boyd their reckoning and jumped forward in time to show where things landed. It was a proper ending, the kind where you can feel the writers saying goodbye rather than being told to stop. For a show rooted in Elmore Leonard's voice and sensibility, going out clean made sense. Leonard himself died in 2013, and there was something appropriate about the series wrapping up not long after, having honored what he built rather than endlessly mining it.
