What is Power about?

Ghost wants out. That is the premise driving all six seasons of Power, the Starz crime drama that ran from 2014 to 2020. James St. Patrick, played by Omari Hardwick, is a man splitting himself in two: legitimate nightclub owner on one side, major drug distributor on the other, and absolutely convinced he can walk away from the second life without losing everything. He is wrong about this, repeatedly, and watching him fail to learn that lesson is most of what the show is.

The tone sits somewhere between prestige cable drama and guilty pleasure, and Power leaned into both sides with varying success. The suits are expensive, the sex scenes are frequent, and the plot turns are sometimes absurd. But Hardwick carries a real gravity, and Joseph Sikora as Tommy Egan, Ghost's childhood friend and criminal partner, is genuinely entertaining in a way that occasionally overshadows the lead. The show is at its best when it keeps those two in the same room with conflicting interests, and at its weakest when it sprawls into political subplots involving Larenz Tate's scheming councilman.

Critics treated Power as reasonably competent prestige-lite, but audiences on Starz loved it, and the show became one of the channel's biggest properties. The 8.1 rating on IMDb reflects a fanbase that found real investment in these characters, not just casual viewership. The final season's mystery format, centered on who killed Ghost, kept people talking even when the answer landed with mixed reactions.

Compared to cable dramas about men trapped between criminal worlds and legitimate ambition, Power is less rigorous than The Wire and more stylistically slick than it probably needed to be. What kept it going for six seasons is that Tasha, played by Naturi Naughton, slowly stops being a supporting character and becomes one of the more interesting figures in the whole story, which is something the show took too long to figure out.

Power ended because creator Courtney Kemp and the producers decided six seasons was the right place to stop, with the story of James "Ghost" St. Patrick reaching a natural, if bloody, conclusion. The show had always been built around a specific arc: a drug kingpin trying to go legitimate while being pulled back into the life at every turn. By season six, that tension had been stretched about as far as it could go, and the finale delivered the kind of definitive ending that made continuing the main series without its central character essentially impossible.

What's worth noting is that ending Power didn't mean STARZ was walking away from the universe Kemp built. The network had already greenlit a series of spinoffs under the Power Book banner before the flagship even finished its run. Power Book II: Ghost, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, and others were either in development or already announced by the time the finale aired in February 2020. That's a smart piece of network strategy: let the mothership end on its own terms, keep the audience invested, and then redirect that loyalty toward new chapters. STARZ got more mileage out of concluding Power gracefully than it ever would have gotten from running it into the ground.

The show also finished in genuinely strong shape. An 8.1 on IMDb and consistent ratings throughout its run meant this wasn't a case of declining interest forcing anyone's hand. Power ended because the story was done, not because the audience had left.
