What is American Gods about?

American Gods asks you to follow Shadow Moon, a man freshly released from prison, as he gets pulled into the schemes of an old con artist who claims to be Odin himself. What starts as a road trip becomes a secret war between ancient gods brought to America by immigrants and the newer deities of technology, media, and commerce that have replaced them. It's Neil Gaiman's novel adapted for television, and the premise alone explains why people watched: the idea of forgotten gods hiding in truck stops and roadside attractions across America is simply magnetic.

The show is visually audacious in a way that sometimes works brilliantly and sometimes collapses under its own weight. Bryan Fuller brought his maximalist sensibility to the production, which means you get scenes of genuine strangeness and beauty, particularly anything involving the goddess Bilquis, but also meandering episodes that feel more interested in style than momentum. The tone sits somewhere between noir and magical realism, with Ian McShane's Mr. Wednesday serving as a weathered, funny anchor who almost justifies the show's self-seriousness. When American Gods commits to its weirdness, it's genuinely arresting. When it stalls, which happens often, you feel how much the story is marking time.

Critics were divided, and audiences eventually split too. The first season earned respectful reviews and solid viewership, but the show lost steam as it progressed, partly because of creative instability behind the scenes and partly because the episodic structure couldn't sustain the central conflict across multiple seasons. By the third and final season, the audience had largely moved on, and the show ended without much fanfare or closure.

American Gods never quite solved the problem of how to tell an ongoing story out of what might have worked better as a miniseries. It remains a beautifully made show with real moments of inspiration, but also a cautionary tale about adapting novels with sprawling mythologies.
