What is Power Book III: Raising Kanan about?

Power Book III: Raising Kanan is a prequel that traces how Kanan Stark became the ruthless antagonist of the original Power series, setting the story in 1990s South Jamaica, Queens at the moment his mother Raq begins building her drug empire. The appeal is straightforward: if you've watched Power and wondered how its villain got there, this show provides the answer, but it also works as a standalone crime drama about a family business and the people it corrupts.

The show's real strength is Patina Miller as Raq, Kanan's mother. She's the gravitational center, a woman managing ambition, motherhood, and the violent world she's chosen, and Miller plays her with intelligence and barely contained rage. The series builds much of its tension around watching a smart person make incrementally worse choices and drag her son along. It's not quite as propulsive as the original Power, but it has a different appeal: it's interested in how power operates within a family, how damage passes down, and what happens when a kid is raised inside a criminal operation rather than pulled into it as an adult.

Critics and audiences responded warmly enough. The show landed solid reviews for its cast performances and willingness to explore character psychology rather than just stringing together heist plots. Viewers who loved the original series showed up reliably, though Raising Kanan never quite achieved the same cultural footprint. There's something about prequels that limits their ceiling, even when they're competently made.

It occupies the middle tier of the Power universe shows. Better paced and more focused than some of its sister series, it benefits from having a clear end point built into its premise. The season four finale landed in May 2025, leaving the question of whether there's actually more story to tell or if the show has already delivered what it set out to do.
