Raising Kanan is a prequel to the long-running Power franchise, tracing how a teenage boy named Kanan Stark, eventually played by Omari Hardwick in the original series, becomes the hardened criminal audiences already knew him to be. What distinguishes it from a lot of prestige crime drama is that the mother is the most interesting character on screen. The series sits comfortably within the Starz crime drama ecosystem, with production values that feel a step above cable average and a pace that can be generous to the point of indulgence in its middle episodes. It has found a loyal audience, reflected in a steady renewal track and an IMDb score that suggests viewers who stay with it tend to like it. Critics have been warmer on the performances than on the writing, and that seems about right.

What the show does best is small: a family dinner where everything is normal and nothing is safe, or a scene where Raq redirects a conversation with a single sentence.
