Fans of the original showed up, but the spinoff did not appear to expand the franchise's reach in any meaningful way. Starz cancelled it after one season, which given the network's recent history with premium genre programming is not a surprise, though it does leave some storylines unresolved.

The show is at its best when it remembers that Ashur's appeal was always his slipperiness, his ability to read a room and find the angle no one else saw. The scenes where he navigates Roman social politics, playing patrons against rivals with his ludus as his leverage, are sharper than the broader arena spectacle. That specific tension, the freed slave who owns slaves, the outsider performing the role of Roman power broker, is genuinely interesting territory, and the show touches it without ever fully committing to the discomfort it should create.
