What is BLUE EYE SAMURAI about?

Blue Eye Samurai is a revenge story about Mizu, a mixed-race swordswoman in Edo-period Japan who has been systematically erased from society and now methodically hunts down the men responsible. It's animated, violent, and deliberately paced in ways that defy what you might expect from either Japanese animation or samurai stories. This is not a show that rushes to the next fight scene. Instead it builds toward them with the patience of someone who has already decided exactly how many people need to die.

The show moves between elegance and brutality in its animation. There are sequences of pure visual storytelling, long stretches without dialogue where Mizu simply moves through a world that refuses to acknowledge her existence. Then suddenly there is blood, sudden and specific. The tone is cold. Mizu is not sympathetic in the traditional sense. She does terrible things, she lies, she manipulates. But the show never asks you to forgive her for it or to see her violence as anything other than what it is: the only language available to someone the world has already decided was disposable. Maya Erskine's voice performance carries an intensity that never cracks into melodrama.

Critics and audiences responded enthusiastically. The show has an IMDb rating of 8.7, and many viewers were struck by how thoroughly it commits to its premise and how willing it is to make Mizu complicated rather than heroic. The animation draws visual and thematic comparisons to other adult-oriented anime, but Blue Eye Samurai stands apart because it never winks at the audience. It does not treat its violence as cool or its protagonist as cool. It treats both as inevitable.

The first season has eight episodes. The show has been renewed, which suggests Netflix is confident enough in the premise to let it continue, though a revenge story can only extend so far before it becomes repetitive. What makes Blue Eye Samurai work in its current form is the specificity of its anger and the refusal to resolve anything cleanly.
