What is Entourage about?

Entourage is a show about male friendship and Hollywood excess, and it works best when you accept that it has no real interest in criticizing either. Vince Chase and his boys from Queens, his agent Ari Gold screaming into phones, the parade of celebrities playing themselves, the parties, the deals, the cars: it is a fantasy, and it knows it. The show ran on HBO from 2004 to 2011 and became, for a stretch in the mid-2000s, essential Sunday night television for a certain kind of viewer who wanted to feel like they were inside the industry.

What makes it distinctive is the almost complete absence of stakes. Vince rarely suffers in any lasting way. Problems resolve. The entourage stays intact. This should be boring, and sometimes it is, but the show compensates with Jeremy Piven, whose Ari Gold is genuinely one of the great comic creations of that era of television. Piven won three consecutive Emmy Awards for the role, and he earned them. The rest of the cast is fine, but Piven is the reason to keep watching through the slower seasons.

Critics were often ambivalent, noting the thinness of the characters and the show's reflexive celebration of a world it might have examined. Audiences were considerably more enthusiastic, and the IMDb rating of 8.4 reflects genuine affection. The later seasons, particularly seven and eight, tested even loyal viewers as the formula grew visibly tired and the wish-fulfillment started to feel less fun and more repetitive.

Compared to something like The Larry Sanders Show, which genuinely interrogated Hollywood ego and anxiety, Entourage is content to sunbathe. That is not always a complaint. Sometimes you want to watch attractive people drive expensive cars through a version of Los Angeles where everything works out, and for most of its run this show was very good at being exactly that.

The show followed Vince Chase and his crew through the highs and lows of Hollywood, and by season eight that arc had reached a natural resolution. Vince gets sober, finds love, and the boys all land on their feet. Creator Doug Ellin brought the series to a close on his own terms rather than watching it limp along past its expiration date.

By the later seasons, the critical consensus had cooled considerably. What felt fresh and energetic in 2004, a breezy insider look at Los Angeles excess, had started to feel repetitive and, to some critics, increasingly out of touch. The characters faced crises that were always resolved a little too neatly, and the wish-fulfillment fantasy that once made the show fun began to read as shallow. Ratings were still respectable by premium cable standards but the cultural conversation around the show had noticeably quieted. HBO had no apparent reason to force it off the air, but there also was not much pressure to keep it going past a logical stopping point.

The movie that followed in 2015 confirmed that Ellin and the cast still had affection for these characters, but even that project was met with mixed reception, which underlined the sense that the show had wrapped at roughly the right time. Entourage ended because its story was done, and because HBO and the creative team recognized that.
