What is Yellowjackets about?

Yellowjackets begins with a plane crash but doesn't begin as a survival show. The wreck drops a high school soccer team into the Canadian wilderness, yes, but the real engine of the series is the collision between two timelines. We follow the 1996 survivors as they endure impossible conditions in the present day, and we watch their teenage selves in the past slowly become unrecognizable. The show's bet is that you'll care less about whether they escape the forest than about what they become while trapped in it, and whether the adults they've turned into can face what they did.

The tone swings wildly and that's partly the point. A scene can move from genuine horror to darkly comic to quiet and introspective without feeling like tonal whiplash because the show understands that trauma is like that. The creators milk tension from both the external (starvation, elements, an increasingly mysterious threat) and the internal (paranoia, alliances fractured by hunger and fear, the question of what happened to the missing players). It leans into a certain prestige-drama earnestness while letting its characters be funny and petty and stupid in ways that feel true to being sixteen. Christina Ricci is particularly sharp as adult Misty, a cheerful sociopath who brings dark comedy to scenes that might otherwise feel grim.

Critics and audiences connected with the show's willingness to not answer questions. That frustrated some viewers expecting a tighter mystery box, but it also drew devoted followers who appreciated that ambiguity and character depth were the actual story. The cast across both timelines commands attention, especially the teen actors who carry the weight of becoming darker versions of themselves. The show has found a steady audience rather than a massive one, which suits its blend of horror, grief, and female-centered narrative.

Yellowjackets sits apart from other plane-crash stories because the crash is almost incidental to what it's really about. It's concerned with how trauma binds people together and corrodes them, how survival costs things that aren't measured in calories, and how you can live a whole life and still not escape the person you were when you were desperate. That focus makes it less interested in plot mechanics than in character damage, which works when you're invested in these women and stops working if you want clearer answers.
