Predictive Logic Analysis

Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 has been cancelled. The series will not continue, and Season 3 is not in development.

What is Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 about?

Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 is a sitcom about two women forced to live together in New York after one of them (Krysten Ritter) cons the other (Dreama Walker) out of her security deposit. It's fundamentally an odd-couple comedy, the kind of setup that has worked a thousand times before, but what made this show worth watching was how much personality Ritter brought to her role as Chloe, the scheming, amoral roommate who treats every interaction like a con game. She's selfish and crude and almost never learns anything, which is genuinely unusual for network comedy. Most shows punish their flawed characters with growth and redemption. This one just lets Chloe be terrible, and somehow that becomes funny rather than exhausting.

The show's tone is deliberately sloppy and chaotic, full of non-sequiturs and characters who pop up and vanish for no good reason. Eric André plays a neighbor, Michael Blaiklock shows up as another neighbor, and the whole thing has the energy of a show that doesn't take itself seriously enough to follow basic sitcom structure. What probably killed it with ABC's audience was that it's genuinely mean-spirited in a way broadcast network comedies usually aren't. There's also a running gag where James Van Der Beek plays a parody version of himself, which works well enough but feels tacked on once you realize the show is really about watching Ritter and Walker bounce off each other.

Audiences and critics were lukewarm on it during its two-season run. The show developed a cult following among viewers who appreciated Ritter's performance and the show's refusal to be conventionally likable, but it never built enough momentum to survive on a network that had limited patience for something this weird and small-scale. At 7.3 on IMDb it sits respectably above average, which is probably more generous than ABC's ratings actually were. The show is worth hunting down if you like character-driven comedy that cares more about being truthful about its characters than about making them sympathetic.

Why was Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 cancelled?

"Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23" arrived at ABC with genuine novelty. The show paired Krysten Ritter's cunning con artist with Dreama Walker's earnest Midwesterner in a sitcom that had real bite, and critics noticed. A 7.3 rating on IMDb reflects an audience that got what the show was doing, even if that audience turned out to be smaller than ABC needed. The problem was never the quality of the writing or performances. It was the numbers.

ABC's schedule in 2012 was crowded with comedies, and this one drew ratings that trended downward across its first season. Network television was tightening its belt, and shows without broad, stable viewership didn't get long to find their footing. The show did get a second season, which is something, but by January 2013 it was clear the network had moved on. Eighteen episodes was all ABC was willing to stake on it, and the network pulled the plug rather than risk investing further in a show that wasn't gaining ground.

What's frustrating about this cancellation is that "Don't Trust the B----" had room to grow. It was a show that rewarded repeat viewing and had a distinct voice. But network television in that era demanded immediate, measurable success, and the gap between what critics and loyal viewers appreciated and what the mass audience delivered was too wide for ABC to bridge. The show ended not because it had run out of ideas, but because it had run out of chances.
