What is 3 Body Problem about?

David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo's adaptation of Liu Cixin's beloved novel arrives with the weight of enormous expectations, and it mostly earns them. The eight-episode first season takes the source material's most demanding quality, its insistence that the human drama and the cosmological horror are equally important, and commits to both. The result is expensive, serious science fiction that actually means what it says about the terror of first contact.

The show spreads its story across decades and continents, from the Cultural Revolution's brutal opening to contemporary London and beyond, following a group of physics graduates whose friendships anchor something far larger than any of them can yet grasp. What distinguishes the tone is a kind of patient dread. There are stretches here that feel genuinely cold, not stylistically cold but existentially so, the way the source material intended. The visual set pieces are impressive, particularly the sequences inside a hallucinatory virtual-reality game that the production uses to dramatize astrophysical concepts. The cast is deep, and Benedict Wong's detective is a particular pleasure, laconic and funny in ways that keep the show from disappearing into its own solemnity.

Critics received it warmly, noting that it handled the novel's notoriously difficult ideas more gracefully than anyone expected. Audience reaction was strong enough for Netflix to confirm a second season quickly. The main criticism from readers of Liu Cixin's trilogy was the Westernization of the story's core group, though Rosalind Chao's Ye Wenjie, the character who starts everything, remains the show's moral and emotional center.

The obvious comparison is to other big-budget prestige science fiction, but 3 Body Problem is more interested in ideas than in action, and it earns that interest precisely because the ideas are large enough to carry the weight. It does not always move quickly, and some episodes feel stretched. But when it lands, as in its final two episodes, it lands hard. The image of physicists receiving a message that tells them, in effect, that science itself is being sabotaged from the outside is one of the more unsettling things television has produced in recent memory.
