What is The Summer I Turned Pretty about?

Adapted from Jenny Han's YA novel trilogy, The Summer I Turned Pretty is a beach-house coming-of-age romance centered on Belly Conklin, a teenager caught between two brothers across successive summers at the same coastal property. The love triangle is the engine, yes, but the show is also genuinely interested in the mothers, in female friendship, in grief, and in the particular ache of a childhood place that stops feeling safe. That turns out to be enough to make it worth watching even if you arrived skeptical of the premise.

Lola Tung carries the show with a naturalism that keeps Belly from being merely a prize the Fisher brothers compete over. Christopher Briney's Conrad is the obvious draw, brooding and withholding in the way the genre demands, but Gavin Casalegno gives Jeremiah enough warmth and hidden hurt that the triangle actually functions as a genuine dilemma rather than a foregone conclusion. The show leans hard into its music cues and golden-hour cinematography, which can tip into self-consciousness, but it knows its audience and does not condescend to them.

Critics were reasonably kind, and the audience response on Prime Video was strong enough to carry it through three seasons. It sits somewhere around a 7.3 on IMDb, which is an honest reflection of a show that does what it sets out to do without quite transcending it. People who came in ready to dismiss it as teenage wish fulfillment sometimes found themselves more invested than expected, particularly in the storylines involving the adults.

What lingers after three seasons is the show's understanding that nostalgia is not just sweet, it is a little punishing. Belly keeps returning to Cousins partly because she cannot let go of who she was there, and the show is smart enough to make that both the romance and the problem.

That kind of adaptation has a natural endpoint, and trying to extend it beyond the books would have risked the goodwill the show built with that audience. A 7.3 on IMDb across 26 episodes suggests it held its core viewers reasonably well without ever breaking into broader cultural conversation, which is fine for a show that was always meant to serve a specific audience rather than chase universal appeal.

Season three wrapped in September 2025, and that's that. No cancellation, no surprise ending, no network pulling the plug. The show did what it set out to do.
