What is Sex/Life about?

Billie Connelly has a nice house, a devoted husband, and two small children, and she cannot stop thinking about her ex-boyfriend. That is essentially the whole premise of Sex/Life, Netflix's 2021 drama that became one of those shows people watched in enormous numbers while insisting it was trash. Sarah Shahi plays Billie, a woman whose journal entries about her sexually adventurous past with Brad (Adam Demos) begin to consume her present-tense suburban life, and the show follows her as she edges toward blowing everything up.

The tone is steamy and self-serious in equal measure, which is part of what makes it so odd to sit with. Creator Stacy Rukeyser seems to want the show to function as a real meditation on female desire and the compromises of domestic life, and occasionally it brushes against something honest about how women in particular are expected to simply set aside their former selves. But those moments get buried under wall-to-wall fantasy sequences and a love triangle that the show treats with the gravity of a Greek tragedy. Critics were largely unimpressed. The 5.6 on IMDb reflects the general assessment: watchable, not exactly good. Audiences, though, showed up in remarkable volume during the first season, making it a genuine Netflix phenomenon for a few weeks in the summer of 2021. Season two, which aired in early 2023, could not sustain that heat and the show was cancelled shortly after.

Comparisons to Bridgerton or other prestige-adjacent Netflix romance fare are flattering and not quite right. Sex/Life is messier, less polished, more interested in being transgressive than charming. Shahi is clearly doing more work than the material deserves, and there are scenes where you can see a better version of this show flickering underneath.

Sex/Life had the makings of a prestige drama when it arrived on Netflix in 2021, built on the appeal of a woman caught between suburban domesticity and her wilder past. What it turned into, however, was a show that couldn't decide what it wanted to be, pivoting wildly between steamy melodrama and soap opera nonsense while failing to develop its central characters in any meaningful way. The first season drew viewers on novelty alone, but by the time the second season aired in early 2023, the audience had moved on.

Netflix's appetite for expensive drama that doesn't find a stable audience is limited, especially when critical reception is poor. With an IMDb score stuck at 5.6, the show had worn out its welcome among both critics and the core viewership it needed to justify its budget. The two-year gap between seasons didn't help—streaming audiences rarely maintain interest that long without cultural momentum to sustain them. Netflix cancelled the show rather than greenlight a third season, choosing to invest those resources elsewhere.

The network clearly concluded that Sex/Life had exhausted what it could offer. It ran for two seasons and fourteen episodes total, which is a respectable run on streaming, but not long enough to build the kind of loyal following that might have convinced Netflix to keep it alive. The show had its moment, failed to deepen it, and was shelved accordingly.
