What is Fallout about?

Fallout is set 200 years after nuclear war has reduced America to ash and dust, and it follows three characters whose paths keep colliding across the wasteland: Lucy, a vault-dweller raised on optimism and apple-pie naivety who ventures above ground for the first time; Maximus, an ambitious Brotherhood of Steel squire with complicated loyalties; and Cooper Howard, a pre-war actor now surviving as a ghoul bounty hunter with two centuries of grievances etched into his face. Walton Goggins plays Cooper with a kind of laconic menace that is genuinely hard to look away from, and the show is smart enough to give him a parallel storyline set before the bombs fell, letting him carry the emotional weight of the whole enterprise.

The tone is cheerfully brutal. Prime Video and the show's creators leaned hard into the video game series' habit of pairing jaunty 1950s Americana with graphic violence and moral ambiguity, and it mostly works. The wasteland feels lived-in rather than set-dressed, and the show resists the urge to explain too much too quickly, trusting that new viewers will catch up and fans of the games will find enough new material to stay interested. Ella Purnell's Lucy is the audience surrogate but never a passive one, and watching her sunny vault-dweller worldview get systematically dismantled is often darkly funny.

Audiences responded enthusiastically, with the first season becoming one of Prime Video's more visible successes in years. Critics were largely positive, praising the production design, Goggins, and the tonal confidence. Some reservations surfaced around pacing in the middle episodes and whether the show's world-building occasionally overwhelmed its character work, which is a fair complaint. Moisés Arias as Norm, Lucy's brother who stays behind in the vault and uncovers something unsettling there, gets the quieter, stranger subplot and handles it well, though the vault sections can feel like a different, slower show.

Where Fallout separates itself from other prestige adaptations of beloved properties is in its willingness to be genuinely pulpy. It is not trying to be the next Game of Thrones or The Last of Us. It is trying to be a spaghetti western crossed with a dark satire of American exceptionalism, and when it commits to that, the result is something with real personality. The image of Goggins walking through a destroyed landscape in a rotting cowboy hat, chewing on a severed finger, is not easily forgotten.
