What is Dark Matter about?

Dark Matter starts with a simple, effective premise: a man walks out of his apartment building one night and wakes up in a lab with no memory of how he got there. It turns out Jason Dessen has been kidnapped into an alternate reality where his life went differently, and the only way home is to navigate a world full of hostile versions of himself. Blake Crouch adapts his own novel for Apple TV, and the result is solid genre television that knows exactly what it wants to be: a high-concept thriller about identity and regret with enough plot momentum to carry you through.

The show's real strength is Joel Edgerton, who has to sell the premise by making each version of Jason distinct enough to matter. There's the version who succeeded, the version who never married, the version who made different choices. Edgerton does good work differentiating them, even when the script leans too heavily on explaining the multiverse mechanics at the expense of character depth. Jennifer Connelly as his wife Daniela gives the show its emotional anchor, though she's often sidelined while the male leads juggle exposition. The tone is generally dark and tense, with occasional moments of levity that feel earned rather than forced.

Critics and audiences found it competent if not particularly original. The 7.6 IMDb rating reflects a show that delivers what it promises without reinventing anything. Viewers who appreciate Crouch's brand of propulsive, high-concept storytelling found plenty to engage with, while others felt the multiverse concept was overly familiar territory in an era of Loki, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and countless other parallel-reality narratives. The show doesn't have the stylistic inventiveness or emotional complexity those projects achieved, but it doesn't pretend to either.

It's the kind of show that works better when you're not thinking too hard about the science or comparing it mentally to stronger multiverse stories. If you want an efficient thriller that moves fast and keeps throwing new Jasons at you to track, it delivers. If you're looking for real thematic exploration of identity or consequence, you'll probably find it superficial.
