What is Touch about?

The show wants to believe in something larger than itself. Creator Tim Kring, who built Lost into a phenomenon with Heroes, constructs episodes where a homeless man's phone call somehow triggers a sequence of events that saves a family in Taiwan, or where a child's drawing maps out the solution to someone else's crisis. This kind of plotting requires commitment to coincidence as truth, and the show never winks at that ambition. It's earnest in a way that television rarely attempts anymore, treating synchronicity and connection as real forces rather than narrative gimmicks. That tone is either exactly what you want or exactly what will frustrate you.

Audiences ultimately wanted less of it than Fox hoped. The show pulled respectable ratings initially but declined steadily as the second season progressed, and the network canceled it after 26 episodes. Critics were divided in ways that often came down to whether they could accept the premise's emotional logic. Some found it meditative and moving; others felt it relied too heavily on contrivance and lacked the character work to justify its mythology.
