What is Impulse about?

Impulse is a teenage sci-fi show about a girl who discovers she can teleport. Henry Coles arrives in a small town already angry and detached, and when a classmate assaults her, her body responds by flinging both of them through space. She can move objects and herself instantaneously, but only when she's emotional, and the power exhausts her. The show mines genuine tension from this asymmetry: Henry has an incredible weapon but almost no ability to aim it. She's furious and traumatized, and her power is both her salvation and a liability she can barely understand.

What keeps Impulse watchable is how seriously it treats the psychological fallout of violence. The assault that triggers Henry's powers isn't a plot device to be moved past. It's the source of ongoing pain, shame, and rage that shapes her choices across both seasons. The show doesn't always know what to do with this material, and the tone wavers between small-town thriller and larger conspiracies about the origins of Henry's gift. When it focuses on Henry's relationship with her mother, or her attempts to trust anyone after what happened to her, it's absorbing. When it pivots to government agencies and shadowy experiments, it loses its way.

The second season brought clearer mythology and higher stakes, which some viewers welcomed. Critics and audiences were generally receptive to the show's willingness to ground superhero powers in trauma and survival, though opinions split on whether the broader mythology made the show stronger or just busier. The cast, particularly Maddie Hasson as Henry, grounded the fantastical elements in real emotion.
