What is Ted Lasso about?
Ted Lasso arrived in 2020 as an extended commercial premise (it originated as a series of NBC Sports ads) and somehow became one of the most warmly received comedies of its era. Jason Sudeikis plays an American college football coach hired to manage AFC Richmond, an English Premier League club, by an owner who initially wants the team to fail. He has no idea what he's doing on the pitch. That is, essentially, the whole setup, and the show trusts it completely.
What makes it work, at least in its first two seasons, is that the optimism at the center of the show is treated as something that costs Ted something, not just a personality quirk he deploys on cue. The writers are interested in why a person becomes relentlessly encouraging, and the answer is not entirely comfortable. The supporting cast, particularly Hannah Waddingham as the complicated club owner Rebecca and Brett Goldstein as the furious, secretly tender Roy Kent, do a lot of heavy lifting. Goldstein, a writer on the show, won Emmy Awards for the role, and the recognition was deserved. The ensemble is unusually well-served.
Critics loved it, audiences loved it, and Apple TV+ used it as a flagship. The Emmy wins piled up. By the third season, however, a vocal portion of viewers felt the show had stretched its emotional logic thin, distributing therapy-speak and redemption arcs to so many characters that the specificity softened into something closer to a wellness brand. Those criticisms are fair. The show does, at times, mistake sincerity for depth.
Still, at its best Ted Lasso is funnier and stranger than its reputation for niceness suggests. Roy Kent's relationship with the English language alone earns its TV-MA rating several times over.
