What is Severance about?

Severance is built around one of those premises that sounds like a thought experiment but lands as something much stranger and more personal. Workers at the Lumon Industries corporation have undergone a surgical procedure that splits their consciousness at the elevator: the person who commutes in has no knowledge of what happens at the desk, and the version who clocks out remembers nothing of the workday. Adam Scott plays Mark, whose "innie" and "outie" are both trying to survive, in very different ways, for reasons neither fully understands. The show uses this setup to ask questions about grief, autonomy, and what we consent to when we're desperate enough to stop feeling something.

The tone is where Severance earns its reputation. Director Ben Stiller shoots the Lumon offices with a corporate mid-century blankness that tips from eerie into something approaching comic, and the show knows exactly when to let that humor breathe. John Turturro and Christopher Walken bring a gentle, sad warmth to two colleagues navigating a kind of late-life tenderness in a place designed to make people into furniture. Patricia Arquette plays the floor supervisor Harmony Cobel with a rigidity that occasionally cracks open into something genuinely frightening. The series is patient in a way that can frustrate but ultimately rewards, piling up its mysteries without feeling cynical about delivering answers.

Critics received the first season with significant enthusiasm, and the performance recognition was substantial. The show became one of Apple TV+'s clearest arguments for its own existence as a streaming platform. Audience response has been devoted, sometimes to the point of obsessive theorizing, which the show encourages with its deliberate pacing and symbolic density. The second season, arriving after a longer wait, largely justified the loyalty of those viewers, though some found the expansion of Lumon's mythology more unwieldy than illuminating.

What separates Severance from other prestige workplace surrealism is that it never forgets the people inside the concept. The innie workers, who have no life outside the fluorescent-lit hallways, are not just plot devices. They want things, make friends, feel betrayed. That emotional core keeps the show grounded even when its mythology strains under its own weight, and it is why the image of Adam Scott dancing alone in an empty office for reasons he cannot explain stays with you long after the episode ends.
