What is House of Cards about?

House of Cards arrived on Netflix in February 2013 as something genuinely new: a prestige drama released all at once, in a format that rewired how people consumed television. That binge-watching origin story is now baked into the show's legacy, for better and worse. What the show actually is, beneath the cultural noise, is a cold, cynical portrait of Washington ambition, following Frank Underwood as he methodically destroys anyone standing between him and the presidency. Kevin Spacey played Frank in the first five seasons, addressing the camera directly in asides borrowed from the BBC original, and those moments of conspiratorial winking gave the show a theatrical charge that separated it from grimmer political dramas.

The tone is deliberately operatic. Beau Willimon built a Washington that works more like a chess problem than a real city, where every conversation is a negotiation and no one does anything without calculating the return. That artificiality is partly the point, and partly a genuine weakness. The show can feel airless, a succession of power moves with nothing much underneath them. But when it was working, especially in the earlier seasons, the sheer momentum of Frank's scheming was genuinely gripping television.

Critics embraced it early and audiences followed, pushing it to the kind of cultural saturation that few streaming shows managed at the time. The Emmy nominations piled up. Then came the sexual misconduct allegations against Spacey in late 2017, which effectively ended his tenure on the show mid-production. Netflix took the remarkable step of continuing with a sixth season built around Robin Wright's Claire Underwood, now president, which was narratively clumsy and visibly improvised under difficult circumstances.

Wright is excellent throughout the run, and the sixth season, whatever its structural problems, has the strange distinction of being the only season of a major drama that had to quietly write its male lead out of existence mid-story. The show ended not with a bang but with a kind of institutional shrug, which, given what the show was about, feels almost appropriate.

House of Cards was always going to end eventually, but the way it actually ended is inseparable from the Kevin Spacey scandal. When multiple accusations of sexual misconduct against Spacey surfaced in late 2017, Netflix moved quickly, suspending production on the already-announced sixth season and ultimately cutting ties with him entirely. The show had been built around his Francis Underwood for five seasons, so the network faced a genuine problem: finish the story without its lead, or walk away from one of its most prestigious early originals.

Netflix chose to finish it. Season six was retooled to center Robin Wright's Claire Underwood, and it ran for an abbreviated eight episodes rather than the usual thirteen. The result was a truncated, somewhat rushed conclusion that critics and audiences received coolly. Ratings, or in Netflix terms, viewership figures, had already been declining from the show's peak in its earlier seasons, and the off-screen chaos did nothing to help. By season six, the show felt less like a triumphant finale and more like damage control.

So the ending here is complicated. It wasn't a cancellation in the traditional sense, and it wasn't exactly a planned conclusion either. Netflix wrapped up the series on its own terms under difficult circumstances, giving it a proper finale rather than leaving it unfinished. Season six exists essentially because abandoning the show entirely would have been its own kind of scandal. The show ended because there was simply no version of it left to continue.
