The direct address device, borrowed from the British original, gives the whole thing a slightly artificial sheen that actually suits the material. This is not a show trying to feel like life. It wants to feel like power, which is a different thing.

Critical reception in the early seasons was strong, and the show became a genuine cultural touchstone for conversations about political cynicism. Later seasons drew more mixed responses as the plotting grew more baroque and the show seemed to be straining against its own internal logic. Then came the real-world collapse: Spacey's removal following sexual misconduct allegations reshaped the final season entirely around Robin Wright's Claire, and the result is a strange, unresolved conclusion that functions more as damage control than drama. Wright carries it with real composure, but the season asks the audience to accept a dramatic restructuring that the story wasn't built for.

What the show will ultimately be remembered for, beyond its off-screen crisis, is how thoroughly it normalized streaming drama as appointment television. It arrived at exactly the right cultural moment, and for at least its first two seasons it fully deserved the attention it received. The drop-off is real, but those early episodes remain a sharp, nasty piece of political theater.

The show had been built around his Francis Underwood for five seasons, so the network faced a genuine problem: finish the story without its lead, or walk away from one of its most prestigious early originals.

Netflix chose to finish it. Season six was retooled to center Robin Wright's Claire Underwood, and it ran for an abbreviated eight episodes rather than the usual thirteen. The result was a truncated, somewhat rushed conclusion that critics and audiences received coolly. Ratings, or in Netflix terms, viewership figures, had already been declining from the show's peak in its earlier seasons, and the off-screen chaos did nothing to help. By season six, the show felt less like a triumphant finale and more like damage control.

So the ending here is complicated. It wasn't a cancellation in the traditional sense, and it wasn't exactly a planned conclusion either. Netflix wrapped up the series on its own terms under difficult circumstances, giving it a proper finale rather than leaving it unfinished. Season six exists essentially because abandoning the show entirely would have been its own kind of scandal. The show ended because there was simply no version of it left to continue.
