What is The League about?

The League is a comedy about six friends in a fantasy football league, but the fantasy football is almost incidental to what the show actually does. It uses the league as a container for the kind of comedy that happens when you let talented people improvise around a topic they actually care about. The result feels looser and messier than a traditional sitcom, which is exactly the point.

The show's tone is aggressively crude and willing to say things network comedies won't. It's set in Chicago, centered on characters who are in their thirties and haven't entirely figured out adulthood, and it finds comedy in their failures. Mark Duplass plays the one guy trying to be responsible while everyone around him sabotages themselves. Nick Kroll's character Ruxin is a lawyer who is somehow also the worst at basic human interaction. Jon Lajoie plays Taco, who is possibly the worst at everything. The semi-improvised format means conversations veer into territory that feels genuinely unscripted, which gives the show a particular kind of spontaneity. It's funny in an unforgiving way, and it doesn't apologize for that.

Critics and audiences found plenty to like in the early seasons, though opinion softened as the show went on. The chemistry between the cast felt real because many of them knew each other before the show started. By the later seasons, some felt the show was running out of ideas and relying too heavily on shock value, but it maintained its core audience and ran for seven seasons on FX, which is respectable for a cable comedy that wasn't trying to be prestige television.
