What is Twin Peaks about?

Kyle MacLachlan's Dale Cooper arrives in Twin Peaks drinking coffee, eating pie, and dictating notes into a tape recorder addressed to a woman named Diane. He is charming and odd and immediately one of the most likeable characters American television had produced. Then the show starts pulling the floor out from under him, and you realize that the murder of Laura Palmer was never really the point.

David Lynch and Mark Frost launched the series in 1990 as something network television was entirely unprepared for: a soap opera that genuinely believed in evil, a detective procedural that kept dissolving into dream logic, a small-town comedy with a red room at the center of its universe. The comedy is real and warm, the horror is real and cold, and Lynch refuses to let either cancel the other out. The owls, the douglas firs, the traffic light swinging in the wind at night. Everything is slightly wrong in a way you cannot quite name.

The original run became a cultural phenomenon and then, famously, collapsed under the weight of network pressure to solve its central mystery too soon. Critics and audiences who found the revelation deflating were not wrong. But the show recovered some of its footing before cancellation, and its reputation kept growing in the decades that followed, enough that Showtime handed Lynch and Frost eighteen episodes in 2017 to finish whatever they wanted to finish. The Return is demanding, frequently alienating television that plays by almost no conventional rules. Some viewers found it a masterwork. Others felt abandoned by it, sometimes furiously so. Both reactions are reasonable.

What holds across all three seasons is MacLachlan's performance, which ranges from heroic to heartbreaking to something approaching slapstick depending on which version of Cooper he is playing at any given moment. The third season's extended sequence of Cooper wandering through suburban Las Vegas in a near-catatonic state is either patience-destroying or hypnotic, and deciding which says something real about your relationship with Lynch as a filmmaker.

Twin Peaks is a genuinely strange case in television history, because it effectively ended twice. The original ABC run collapsed after a second season that lost its way badly. David Lynch and Mark Frost's peculiar murder mystery had captured enormous cultural attention in 1990, but ABC pushed the creative team to reveal who killed Laura Palmer far sooner than they wanted to. Once that answer came, the show struggled to find a new center of gravity, ratings fell sharply, and ABC cancelled it in 1991 with a cliffhanger ending that left Agent Cooper trapped in the Black Lodge. For 25 years, that was where things stood.

The 2017 Showtime revival, subtitled "The Return," was a different animal entirely. Lynch and Frost came back with full creative control and produced something closer to an 18-hour film than a conventional television series. It was uncompromising, often deliberately slow, and deeply weird even by Lynch's standards. Showtime supported it, and the IMDb rating of 8.7 across the full run reflects genuine admiration from the audience that followed it. But Lynch has been publicly uncertain about whether there is more story to tell, and the ending of "The Return" was not exactly a clean resolution, it was more of an open wound.

There has been talk of a potential fourth season, but nothing has materialized, and at this point the show's conclusion seems to rest entirely on Lynch's willingness and ability to return to it. He has never been someone who revisits things on anyone else's schedule. The Return feels, in retrospect, like a final statement rather than a setup for more, and that is probably the most honest way to read where things ended.
