What is Big Sky about?

Big Sky works best when it treats itself as a straightforward procedural about competent women hunting a killer, and worst when it gets tangled in the soapy complications its creator David E. Kelley kept introducing. The show opens strong with a premise that feels urgent: private detective Cassie Dewell and ex-cop Jenny Hoyt pursuing a truck driver who kidnaps women along a Montana highway. There's real tension in those early episodes, a sense that the clock is actually ticking. If you want crime drama built on solid police work and genuine chemistry between its leads, the first season delivers that reasonably well.

The problem is that Big Sky never stayed interested in its own investigation for long. By season two, it was juggling serial killers, mob plots, and increasingly baroque personal vendettas, as if Kelley wanted to prove the show could do everything at once. Some viewers appreciated the melodrama and the willingness to kill off characters unexpectedly. Others found it exhausting, a show that couldn't sit with a single compelling case long enough to resolve it. Katheryn Winnick and Kylie Bunbury have good rapport, and Jensen Ackles brought a different energy when he joined as a state trooper in the second season, but the plotting around them grew messy.

Critics were mixed, and audiences didn't stick around. The show pulled decent initial numbers but dropped significantly in its second and third seasons, which ABC seemed to lose patience with.
