The basement of the Forman house in Point Place, Wisconsin is one of the great hangout spaces in sitcom history. Six teenagers sit in a circle, mostly doing nothing, and somehow that is enough. That '70s Show ran for eight seasons on FOX starting in 1998, and its central joke was deceptively simple: teenagers are the same in every era, and the 1970s are just funny. The bell-bottoms and the 8-tracks are window dressing. The real subject is the particular agony and comedy of being young, stuck in a small town, and absolutely certain the rest of your life is going to be more interesting than this.

The show is warmest in its early seasons, when the ensemble feels balanced and the writing has an easy confidence. Kurtwood Smith as Red Forman is a genuine comic creation, a man whose love for his son Eric is expressed almost entirely through threats and disappointment. Debra Jo Rupp matches him perfectly as Kitty, relentlessly cheerful in a way that reads as both sweet and slightly desperate. Among the younger cast, Mila Kunis and Laura Prepon both grew considerably over the run, and the show is worth watching just to see Kunis, who was around fourteen when it started, figure out what Jackie Burkhart is actually about.

The later seasons are harder to defend. Once Topher Grace departed and Josh Meyers arrived as Randy, a replacement lead character nobody asked for, the show visibly ran out of road. Critics and audiences largely agreed: the first four or five seasons are consistently funny, and then it becomes something you watch out of affection for the characters rather than because it has anything new to say. The circular conversation format, occasionally used to imply the gang was getting high without ever saying so, stays fresh longer than you might expect, but even that wears thin eventually.

What holds up best is how the period detail never becomes a nostalgia lecture. The show trusts the decade to be funny without explaining it, which is rarer than it sounds. Red Forman telling Eric to stop being a dumbass against a backdrop of harvest-gold appliances and Star Wars merchandise is a specific comedy of time and place, and that specificity is what the spinoff That '90s Show is inevitably chasing.

That '70s Show ran for eight seasons and 200 episodes, which is a genuinely impressive run for any sitcom. By the time it wrapped in 2006, it had essentially told the story it set out to tell. The show was always built around a specific window of time, the late 1970s, and a specific group of teenage friends growing up in Point Place, Wisconsin. There's only so long you can keep that premise going before the characters age out of it entirely.

The departure of Topher Grace, who played central character Eric Forman, was the clearest sign that the show had reached its natural limit. Grace left after season seven to pursue a film career, and the eighth season brought in a replacement character, Randy, who never really landed with audiences. Ratings had been slipping for a couple of seasons before the finale, and losing the lead was the kind of wound the show couldn't fully recover from. Ashton Kutcher, who played Kelso, also reduced his role significantly around the same time.

FOX let the show conclude rather than cancel it outright, and the finale brought Grace back for a proper send-off, which suggests there was at least some intent to close things out on the show's own terms. But it's hard to argue the eighth season represented the show at its best. It felt more like a gradual wind-down than a triumphant ending. Still, eight seasons is a long life for a show like this, and most of it holds up well.
