iCarly ran for six seasons on Nickelodeon, which is a genuinely long run for a live-action kids' show on that network. Carly, Sam, and Freddie were no longer convincingly young teenagers, and that kind of drift is hard to paper over when your core audience is watching kids who are supposed to be roughly their own age.

Creator Dan Schneider had built the show into one of Nickelodeon's biggest properties, but there's a natural ceiling to how long you can sustain a web-show-within-a-TV-show concept before the novelty wears off. By Season 6 the ratings had softened considerably from the peak years around 2008 and 2009, when iCarly was regularly pulling in massive numbers for the network. Nickelodeon was also beginning to shift attention toward newer properties, and holding onto a cast that was aging into young adults made less sense for a channel built around tweens.

The ending looks like a mutual recognition that the show had run its course rather than a cancellation. Miranda Cosgrove was heading toward college age, the original energy of the concept had been stretched about as far as it could go, and Schneider moved on to other projects.
