What is Supergirl about?

The series was also ahead of the broader superhero curve on representation, introducing Nicole Maines as Nia Nal, a trans superhero, and treating that identity as a real part of the character rather than a background detail. Katie McGrath's Lena Luthor became the show's most discussed relationship, and the slow burn between Lena and Kara attracted a devoted audience that the writers were arguably too cautious to fully satisfy.

Critics found it charming in early seasons and increasingly uneven later. The IMDB rating of 6.2 is about right. Season one, still on CBS, had a polish and focus the later CW seasons sometimes lost as the show expanded its cast and leaned harder into crossover events with other Arrowverse series. The final season, shortened by the pandemic, felt rushed in ways that frustrated longtime viewers hoping for a proper conclusion.

The ending was a planned one. The producers and The CW agreed to a sixth and final season, giving the creative team the chance to close out Kara Danvers' story on their own terms rather than having it yanked away mid-arc.

The ratings had been sliding for years, which was nothing unusual for The CW's superhero bloc, but the economics of that network always worked differently than elsewhere. Shows there could survive on modest numbers because the cost structure and the value of catalog rights kept them viable longer than they would be on a broadcast powerhouse. Still, nothing lasts forever, and by Season 6 the Arrowverse as a whole was contracting. Arrow had already ended, and the broader shared universe that had been The CW's identity for most of the 2010s was winding down piece by piece.

There was also the matter of Melissa Benoist, whose commitment to the role had always been central to the show's appeal. After six years and 126 episodes, concluding the series made sense creatively and practically. The show had told most of the stories it had to tell, the universe around it was shrinking, and the network was entering a period of significant ownership transition and strategic rethinking. Ending at six seasons, with a proper finale, was about as graceful an exit as a superhero procedural could hope for.
