What is Supergirl about?

Supergirl started on CBS in 2015 with a bright, deliberately optimistic take on Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, and Melissa Benoist was a large part of why that worked. She played Kara as someone genuinely trying to be good in a world that kept complicating what "good" even means, and that warmth carried the show through a lot of uneven plotting. It moved to The CW after one season, where it joined the broader Arrowverse crossover universe, and that shift told you something about what the show was aiming for: not gritty, not cynical, relentlessly hopeful even when the writing didn't quite earn the emotion it was reaching for.

The tone is the show's most distinctive quality and also its most divisive. Some viewers found the earnestness refreshing in a superhero landscape that often mistakes darkness for depth. Others found it cloying, particularly in later seasons when social commentary was delivered in dialogue that left nothing to subtext. The show made a point of its inclusivity, introducing Nia Nal (Nicole Maines) as the first transgender superhero in a live-action DC series, and that casting had weight beyond representation talking points. Maines was good, and the show treated the character with more care than it sometimes brought to its plotting.

Reception was mixed but loyal. Critics were warm early on and cooler as the seasons stretched, and the IMDb score of 6.2 reflects an audience that stuck around out of affection for the cast more than confidence in the scripts. The villain-of-the-season structure wore thin by the middle seasons, and the final run felt stretched even by the generous standards of network superhero television.

What Supergirl did better than most of its Arrowverse siblings was maintain a consistent emotional center. Kara's relationship with her adoptive sister Alex (Chyler Leigh) was the show's best ongoing thread, consistently more interesting than whatever alien tyrant or rogue DEO agent was threatening National City that year. Those scenes between Benoist and Leigh are what people who loved the show actually remember.

Supergirl ran for six seasons across two networks, starting on CBS in 2015 before moving to The CW after its first year, and by the time it wrapped in November 2021 it had become one of the longer-running entries in what fans called the Arrowverse. The ending was a planned one. The producers and The CW agreed to a sixth and final season, giving the creative team the chance to close out Kara Danvers' story on their own terms rather than having it yanked away mid-arc.

The ratings had been sliding for years, which was nothing unusual for The CW's superhero bloc, but the economics of that network always worked differently than elsewhere. Shows there could survive on modest numbers because the cost structure and the value of catalog rights kept them viable longer than they would be on a broadcast powerhouse. Still, nothing lasts forever, and by Season 6 the Arrowverse as a whole was contracting. Arrow had already ended, and the broader shared universe that had been The CW's identity for most of the 2010s was winding down piece by piece.

There was also the matter of Melissa Benoist, whose commitment to the role had always been central to the show's appeal. After six years and 126 episodes, concluding the series made sense creatively and practically. The show had told most of the stories it had to tell, the universe around it was shrinking, and the network was entering a period of significant ownership transition and strategic rethinking. Ending at six seasons, with a proper finale, was about as graceful an exit as a superhero procedural could hope for.
