Highlander: The Series ran for six seasons in syndication starting in 1992, built around a simple but durable premise: Duncan MacLeod is an immortal Scotsman who has been wandering the earth for four centuries, fighting other immortals with swords and occasionally befriending mortals he will inevitably outlive. It spun off from the 1986 film but quickly developed its own identity, using Duncan's longevity as an excuse to tell stories set across wildly different historical periods through flashback sequences that became the show's most reliable storytelling device.

The tone is earnest in a way that could easily have been laughable, and sometimes is. Adrian Paul plays Duncan with a brooding sincerity that works better in the quieter, more morally complicated episodes than in the straightforward action ones. What saves the show from its own pomposity is the supporting cast. Jim Byrnes as Joe Dawson, a mortal who secretly belongs to a society that chronicles immortals, brings genuine warmth. Peter Wingfield's Methos, introduced in later seasons as the oldest living immortal and a man who has done terrible things to survive, is the best thing the show ever did. Methos is funny, evasive, and morally ambiguous in ways Duncan never quite is, and his scenes consistently have more texture than the rest of the episode around them.

Critical reception at the time was modest at best. The show was syndicated action-adventure television in the early 1990s, a category not exactly courted by serious reviewers. Audiences found it steadily, though, and it built a devoted following that has kept it in circulation for decades. The IMDb score of 7.2 reflects something real: this is not a great show, but it is a watchable one that occasionally rises above its budget and its genre constraints.

The show is comparable to other mythology-heavy syndicated action series of the same era, Xena or Hercules, and shares their inconsistency and their occasional flashes of something better. The difference is that the immortality premise keeps forcing the show to reckon with grief and loss in ways those series largely avoided. Duncan accumulates dead friends, dead lovers, and dead students across 119 episodes, and the weight of that accumulates too.

The show's mythology grew convoluted as it tried to justify why immortals kept showing up in the same places and why the rules of the Gathering kept shifting.

The syndication model that had made the show profitable also worked against its long-term survival. Syndicated action shows lived or died on their ability to find enough stations willing to air them, and they operated on modest budgets that became increasingly hard to justify for aging series. By the late 1990s, network television and cable were beginning to offer more ambitious sci-fi and fantasy programming, and the appeal of low-cost syndicated action dramas was fading. Highlander had its devoted audience, but it was no longer enough to sustain production at a time when the industry's economics were shifting.
