What is Revolution about?

Revolution begins with an arresting premise: the world lost electricity fifteen years ago, and nobody knows why. The show follows a ragtag group trying to survive in what amounts to a second dark ages, though their quest quickly becomes about uncovering the truth behind the blackout itself. What draws viewers in is the scale of the idea, how does civilization actually function without power, combined with the mystery of whether the collapse was an accident or engineered by someone still alive and hiding.

The first season trades on that mystery effectively. Giancarlo Esposito's Tom Neville emerges as an unsettling antagonist, a man who has thrived in the powerless world by becoming a militia commander, and his scenes have real menace. The show's tone sits somewhere between post-apocalyptic survival drama and family melodrama, which can feel awkward when it shouldn't. Charlotte's teenage rebellion plotline competes for screen time with larger questions about power (the concept and the literal infrastructure), and not always to the story's benefit.

Critical reception was lukewarm even at the start, and the show's problems became harder to ignore as it went on. Audiences felt the writers were making things up as they went, introducing explanations for the blackout that felt increasingly convoluted and less satisfying than the mystery itself. By season two, the show had lost much of its original audience. The cast is capable, especially Burke and Esposito, but they could not quite make the plotting cohere.

What ultimately sinks Revolution is a common problem with mystery-box shows: the answers matter less than the asking, and once the show commits to an explanation, it becomes a less interesting version of what it was.
