What is Glee about?

Glee arrived in 2009 as something that felt almost chemically engineered to be discussed: a high school musical comedy set in Lima, Ohio, where a well-meaning Spanish teacher resurrects the glee club and fills it with misfits who can, improbably, belt like Broadway veterans. The show's first season was frequently wonderful, with sharp writing, some genuinely startling comedic performances, and an earnest investment in characters who had no business being as watchable as they were.

Jane Lynch's Sue Sylvester is the clearest argument for watching. Her cheerleading coach is one of television's great comic villains, written with such deranged commitment that she elevates every scene she appears in. Lea Michele's Rachel Berry, self-serious and nearly insufferable by design, is another strong creation. The early seasons found a workable tension between satire and sincerity, and the musical numbers, covering everything from Journey to Britney Spears to show tunes, were staged with real energy.

The problem is that Glee became increasingly hard to defend as it continued. Ryan Murphy's tendency toward chaotic, contradictory storytelling grew more pronounced each season. Characters changed personality wholesale when the plot needed them to. Social issue episodes arrived with the subtlety of a public service announcement. Critics who initially praised the show's freshness grew frustrated with its inconsistency, and audience numbers, which had been substantial, declined steadily. The IMDB score of 6.8 reflects a viewership that remembers the peaks but can't quite forgive the valleys.

What lingers from Glee is less any particular storyline than a specific feeling, the show at its best capturing something real about the particular embarrassment and need for self-expression that makes high school so miserable and so important. That it squandered much of that potential makes it more frustrating, not less interesting, to think about.

Glee ran for six seasons and 121 episodes, which by any reasonable measure is a full run for a broadcast musical drama. The show didn't get cancelled so much as it ran out of road. By seasons four and five, the ratings had fallen sharply from the enormous highs of 2009 and 2010, when Glee was a genuine cultural phenomenon, generating hit singles and landing on the cover of every magazine that mattered. The audience that came for the novelty of show choir kids belting pop songs on network television had largely moved on, and the show's increasingly scattered storytelling made it hard to retain the viewers who stayed.

The death of Cory Monteith in 2013 was a real wound to the show, both emotionally and narratively. Finn Hudson was the closest thing Glee had to a center of gravity, and losing him mid-run left a gap the writers never fully closed. The series kept expanding its cast and relocating storylines to New York, which diluted whatever focus it once had.

By the time FOX and creator Ryan Murphy agreed to a shortened sixth and final season of thirteen episodes, it felt less like a cancellation and more like a mutual acknowledgment that the story had been told. Murphy has said publicly that the sixth season was designed as a conclusion, a chance to bring the original characters back to McKinley High and wrap things up properly. Whether it fully succeeded is debatable, but Glee at least got to end on its own terms, which is more than a lot of shows in its position can say.
