What is Frasier about?

Frasier is a sitcom built almost entirely on the friction between pretension and reality. The title character, a Seattle radio psychiatrist played by Kelsey Grammer, considers himself a man of refinement: opera subscriptions, French cuisine, an expensive apartment with a view. His father Martin, a retired cop who gets around with a cane and an ugly recliner, wants none of it. That recliner, planted in the middle of Frasier's carefully curated living room, is a better piece of visual comedy than most shows manage in their entire runs.

The tone is theatrical in a way American sitcoms rarely attempt. The humor depends less on jokes than on escalating social catastrophe, particularly the kind that results from small deceptions compounding into chaos. David Hyde Pierce as Niles, Frasier's equally snobbish younger brother, is the show's secret weapon. His wordless reaction shots and physical comedy elevated episodes that might otherwise have coasted on dialogue alone, and his long-running, largely unconsummated feelings for Daphne gave the show something genuinely worth caring about across its middle seasons.

The later years are noticeably thinner than the first five or six, as the writers mined the same comedic veins past their richness, but even middling Frasier has sharper timing than most contemporaries.

Among the wave of urban professional comedies that defined NBC's 1990s lineup, it stands apart because its characters are not quite likable. Frasier and Niles are vain, insecure, and frequently insufferable, and the show knows it. The joke is always partly on them.

After eleven seasons playing the same character, first on Cheers and then on his own show, that decision is hard to argue with. The finale in May 2004 was treated as a genuine event, and the show was given a proper sendoff rather than a quiet exit. That alone signals this was an ending on the show's own terms rather than a cancellation.

Frasier also benefited from arriving at a moment when NBC's Thursday night lineup was essentially the center of American television comedy. By 2004, that landscape had shifted, and the show's particular brand of highbrow, wordplay-heavy humor felt slightly out of step with where the culture was heading.
