What is Full House about?

Full House is fundamentally about three men figuring out how to be a family, which gives the show its actual emotional core beneath the sitcom structure. It does not dwell in sustained drama. Someone watches Full House because it promises warmth, jokes that land for kids and adults differently, and the comforting sense that problems get solved before the end credits roll.

The show's tone is relentlessly optimistic and physical. Jesse's leather-jacket cool clashes with Danny's obsessive cleanliness, Joey does impressions and slapstick, and the girls get to be resourceful instead of helpless. Why did Full House end?

Full House ran for eight seasons on ABC, which by any measure is a healthy, complete run for a family sitcom. The show didn't get cancelled so much as it simply grew old gracefully. By 1995, the Tanner children who had been the emotional center of the series were teenagers or approaching adulthood, and the premise of three men raising a houseful of young kids had naturally run its course. There's only so long you can sustain that setup before it starts to feel like the show is treading water.

The ratings had also softened considerably by the later seasons. Full House was a genuine phenomenon in its prime, a cornerstone of ABC's TGIF Friday night lineup, but audience interest had cooled by the mid-90s as tastes shifted and the kids who grew up watching it moved on to other things. The show never collapsed in spectacular fashion, but it was clearly past its peak.

By the time season eight wrapped up in the spring of 1995, there wasn't much story left to tell and no particular appetite from the network or the producers to push further.
