What is Full House about?

Full House ran for eight seasons on ABC and is about as comfortable as television gets. A widowed father, Danny Tanner, moves his brother-in-law Jesse and best friend Joey into the family home to help raise three daughters, and the show never really asks much more of itself than that. It is warm, it is predictable, and for a large portion of its audience, that is exactly the point.

The tone is relentlessly cheerful in a way that can feel either reassuring or suffocating depending on your tolerance for life lessons delivered with a hug and a swelling music cue. Every episode tends to arrive at the same place: someone learns something, feelings are discussed, the family is fine. John Stamos generates most of the show's genuine energy as Uncle Jesse, a character the writers clearly favored as the seasons went on, and the young cast around him, particularly Candace Cameron Bure and Jodie Sweetin, grew into their roles in ways that actually reward watching the later seasons.

Critics were not especially kind to it during its run, and its IMDb rating of 6.8 reflects a show people feel nostalgic about rather than one they consider genuinely good. Audiences, though, turned up in enormous numbers. It became one of ABC's signature Friday night properties and helped define what "family television" meant in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

What's honest about Full House is that it makes no pretense of being anything other than what it is. It exists in the same universe as Family Ties and Growing Pains, safe sitcoms built around the idea that home is where problems get solved inside thirty minutes. The difference is that Full House never developed the sharper edges those shows occasionally found. It stayed soft all the way to the end, and enough people wanted exactly that to keep it running for nearly a decade.

By 1995, the Tanner children who had been the emotional center of the series were teenagers or approaching adulthood, and the premise of three men raising a houseful of young kids had naturally run its course. There's only so long you can sustain that setup before it starts to feel like the show is treading water.

The ratings had also softened considerably by the later seasons. Full House was a genuine phenomenon in its prime, a cornerstone of ABC's TGIF Friday night lineup, but audience interest had cooled by the mid-90s as tastes shifted and the kids who grew up watching it moved on to other things. The show never collapsed in spectacular fashion, but it was clearly past its peak.

By the time season eight wrapped up in the spring of 1995, there wasn't much story left to tell and no particular appetite from the network or the producers to push further. The finale gave the characters something resembling closure, which is usually a sign that everyone involved understood it was time to stop. Full House ended on its own terms, which is more than a lot of shows get.
